Job summary:

We currently have an opening in the LPSD Engine Components and Systems team for a Chief Engineer. Reporting to the Product Manager, the Chief Engineer is the technology and product line architectural owner of engine components and is responsible for delivering value to the customer through the design and development of products that meet their cost, performance, durability, and quality needs. The Chief Engineer is accountable for setting and delivering the product line’s technical and product line architectural vision to meet the product requirements as approved by the Product Manager. The scope of Engine Components and Systems (EC&S) includes turbochargers, air and exhaust system piping and heat shields, wastegates, air shutoffs, lubricating and cooling system hardware, and crankcase ventilation.

Working with various engineering managers, this critical role converts the customer requirements established by the Product Manager and Engine Platform Teams into a basic product concept establishing value targets for all major systems as well as project timing and cost constraints.

What you will do:

  • Actively participate in workforce planning; mentor and develop the next generation of engineers globally – including our teams in Chennai (India) and Wuxi (China).
  • Manage EC&S product warranty and Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) efforts.
  • Providing deep technical expertise and leadership to EC&S team.
  • Ensure that product development projects meet program dates, cost, and quality targets.
  • Understand the business and its impact on technology and customers' businesses and needs, dealing with a global marketplace both in terms of customers and in terms of sourcing suppliers, production, and talent.
  • Developing strong internal and external networks including customers, suppliers, product managers, component and systems managers as well as other technical members of each product team.
  • Manage new technology exploration for the scope of EC&S.
  • Work with internal and external customers to determine needs and resolve problems.
  • Facilitate strong collaboration among other Chief Engineers and provide leadership to key Product Development Excellence projects.
  • Determine product strategy, select the technologies that will be used in production components, and be ultimately responsible for their technical success.
  • Drive product and process design and continuous improvement, ensuring disciplined application of Product Development Excellence, intellectual curiosity, and continuous learning by the product team.
  • Play a key role in managing Intellectual Property as well as capturing domain knowledge which provides Caterpillar a technology / commercial advantage against the competition.
  • Develop supply strategies for engine components and systems, in alignment with procurement teams with a view to long-term partnerships and active engagement by Caterpillar in the aftermarket.

What you must have:

  • Demonstrated expertise in new technology development.
  • Experience with Product Development Processes (e.g. NPI/NTI, APQP, FMEA).
  • Bachelors degree in Engineering AND 12+ years of industry experience with progressively increasing responsibilities.

Top candidates will also have:

  • Experience leading and coaching others.
  • Master's or Ph.D. in an engineering discipline or Science field from an accredited program.
  • Passion for developing robust high-quality components through supplier collaboration.
  • Ability to effectively lead and influence in a matrix organization.
  • Ability to formulate medium- and long-term product strategies.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Breadth of engineering experiences spanning design, simulation, and validation, preferably with engine components.
