Job Description

Job Summary

This position contributes to the programming of the Center’s Washington campus. The incumbent manages food services at the CHS, which include, but are not limited to, day-to-day lunch and beverage services and special events. Through its effectiveness, it provides a safe & hospitable environment to all the Center’s personnel who work on campus as well as: (1) the research fellows who reside on campus, special programs attendees, and (3) visitors who come to use the Center’s library and facilities.

Position Description

Researches, designs, shops for, and prepares lunch menus five days per week for Center personnel; fellowship, special attendee and library user programs; and Center visitors. Maintains standards of excellence for the kitchen and dining experience (examples include but are not limited to: quality product purchased; tasty, attractive and nutritious scratch meals presented; diverse cuisines executed; dietary restrictions accommodated; clean and safe kitchen and dining room environment; little product waste; etc.). Supervises support staff and delegates as needed.
Responsible for kitchen sanitation and recycling programs according to University and District of Columbia guidelines. Responsible for kitchen laundry program.
Accountable for proper receiving procedures, handling, inventory and storage of food, beverage, cleaning and disposable product inventories.
Monitors condition of dining services space including furniture and equipment and alerts appropriates staff of needed repairs/replacements (in coordination with Hospitality Manager).
Financial responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the planning and implementation of the Center’s dining budget (in coordination with the Hospitality Manager) and the tracking, reconciling, and monitoring of expense activities.
Provides support to hospitality team when vacation or unexpected absence prevents or takes away Hospitality Manager and/or team members from regular duties, presuming such assistance is requested/negotiated.
Responsible for kitchen, dining room, satellite pantries and storage spaces, equipment maintenance, and cleaning.


Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required. 5+ yrs. of production and management experience required.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

AOS degree (in culinary arts) from accredited school strongly preferred.
Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and ability to collaborate with colleagues. Experience in computerized food systems preferred. Ability to multitask required. Must be able to supervise and work with direct reports.

Certificates and Licenses

Certificate from chef's training institute and A.O.S. degree from accredited school required. Food handling certificate required.

Physical Requirements

Must have knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment and maintenance requirements. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
