Job Description

Copper is critical to a sustainable future, thus enabling the clean energy transition and global decarbonization efforts. The International Copper Association is poised with its members to lead the copper industry as responsible stewards and forward-looking contributors to sustainable development.

Are you a current leader in the energy transition? Can you utilize your presence, technical knowledge, and ease of communication to connect with audiences and governing bodies around the world as the external voice of this industry? Are you ready for a new challenge with an exponential impact on decarbonization? If so, you may be a contender as the new CEO of the International Copper Association (ICA).

Acre is partnered with the International Copper Association's Board of Directors in its search for their new CEO. Please see the full job description and how to send your interest and CV below and in the link.

Position Purpose - CEO of ICA

Leads the International Copper Association to achieve the organization's purpose. Acts as a leading external voice for copper and ensures strategic plans as well as day-to-day management of the organization are delivered efficiently and effectively based on guidance from the Board of Directors.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  1. Sustain effective member relations through interface with the Board of Directors, and its various committees (e.g., Executive, Strategy, Audit and Compensation) and individual meetings in order to ensure members understand and value the work of the ICA.
  2. Maintain member financial support through an effective member communications and retention program. Plan, develop, and implement strategies for recruiting new members and securing new revenue for program development.
  3. Build a dynamic and effective presence with members and the industry broadly as well as with a wide range of high-level external stakeholders. Where ICA's programs and activities provide the voice for copper, the ICA CEO must serve as the face for copper and, by extension, the copper industry.
  4. Maintain strong and positive working relationships between ICA and the broader Copper Alliance. Continue to build strong and collaborative working relationships with industrial organizations (such as the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM), the Copper Mark, the International Wrought Copper Council (IWCC), the Copper Development Association (CDA), the International Copper Study Group (ICSG), et al.) and other relevant metals associations that can aid the development of copper product markets and enhance the reputation of the copper industry.
  5. Ensure organizational policies, operational procedures, structure and standards are operating effectively and revise as necessary to meet ever-changing industry conditions.
  6. Oversee the implementation of the Strategic Plan and lead the Copper Alliance staff in embracing and delivering the ICA Value Proposition.
  7. Execute the annual planning/budgeting process to ensure that ICA funds are being used effectively and that ICA programs are being properly executed and monitored.
  8. Work closely with senior management to obtain third-party co-funding to leverage the member companies' investment in the ICA in line with the strategic plan and budgeted programs.
  9. Maintain a high level of confidence and integrity in financial reporting coupled with an effective process for monitoring program spending. Oversee important compliance and education initiatives related to US and international antitrust laws, the ICA Code of Conduct, the FCPA, the UK Anti-bribery Act and other relevant country code of business conduct regulations for all staff.
  10. Actively manage the organizations' operations interacting with the Executive Team and programmatic teams on a regular basis to ensure that strategic objectives are met in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Technical Capability and Experience

Have a minimum of 20 years' overall business experience, preferably with full profit and loss responsibility for a meaningful business, business unit, or trade association. Be a dynamic and trusted public speaker. Have successful experience in business and market advocacy together with solid general management skills. Direct experience with copper is not required; however, exposure to metals, their substitutes, or their major end-use markets is highly desired. Other experience and competencies that the search process will take into consideration in selecting the CEO include:

  1. Extensive international business exposure, including working in diverse geographic markets and cultures.
  2. Strong leadership and communication skills and the ability to interface with an independent Board of Directors and Board Committees.
  3. Political acumen and interpersonal skills to build and maintain trust and credibility with a wide range of influential stakeholders external to the copper industry.
  4. Demonstrated ability in leading and managing a global team of senior executives from a diverse set of cultures and business backgrounds, and geographies; operating and interfacing at a senior business executive level within and external to the organization.
  5. Experience developing strategic plans and directing their successful implementation.
  6. Knowledge and experience with public relations principles, practices and techniques, and the development and delivery of presentations, and media interviews.
  7. Track record in the development and execution of annual operating plans, including the analysis of such factors as currency and inflation impacts, hedging, operating costs, etc.
  8. Ability to formulate policy and develop and implement operational processes and procedures.
  9. Ability to identify and secure funding/revenue sources.
  10. Strong understanding of the principles of sustainable development and the importance of the effective integration of these principles into technical programs and business strategies.
  11. Experience with governmental and/or regulatory authorities and large nongovernmental groups, such as the United Nations and its related agencies, European Union, World Bank, etc.

  2. Excellent oral and written communications skills. Able to speak effectively on behalf of the industry, as well as be a good listener with members and others with the ability to forge consensus from diverse viewpoints.
  3. Sensitivity to cultural differences with the ability to interact effectively in multiple cultural/ language settings. All activities and programs are communicated in English; additional language capabilities, particularly Spanish, however, will greatly aid effectiveness.
  4. Self-motivated and enthusiastic about the challenges and opportunities of leading. Stamina and willingness to travel extensively (>50%), primarily internationally, are absolutely required to properly represent the copper industry.

Desirable:
