The opportunity:

In the role of Case Manager I, LTD you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of individuals who have experienced a disability by successfully managing a caseload of long-term disability claims. Leverage your analytical and communication skills to work on one’s own while also thriving in a team setting. This role is key in Sun Life’s journey of building the best benefits company in America.

In this role, you will manage client service, the benefit payment process and the financial risk associated with an assigned block of Long-Term Disability claims. The Case Manager will apply the appropriate contractual provisions, legal guidelines, claims procedures and protocols to the facts of each claim to reach a conclusion on its acceptance or denial and the duration of the benefit payment. You will be responsible for clearly communicating the rationale with confidence and sensitivity for the claimant’s circumstances.

Management accountability for a fully trained Case Manager (typical learning curve of 12 to 18 months) extends to a caseload range of 70-85 LTD claims. A Case Manager who is new in the position is responsible for a smaller caseload with oversight by the team’s Manager and feedback from a more experienced claims mentor.

How you will contribute:

  • Process claims for payment by setting up on claim paying system to ensure accurate and timely receipt of payment benefits
  • Use investigative tools, may testify in court cases and provide depositions related to claim disputes based on technical expertise
  • Assess vocational rehabilitation opportunities by working with vocational staff
  • Obtain all pertinent and necessary information to evaluate claim credibility
  • Prepare written rationale of claim conclusion based on review of contractual provisions and review of medical and occupational records
  • Manage and prioritize a group of claims on an ongoing basis while maintaining appropriate documentation

What you will bring with you:

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, or relevant work experience
  • Solid critical thinking skills as well as the ability to negotiate with people
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with client service orientation
  • 3+years’ experience managing Long Term Disability Claims, strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated expert analytical skills with the ability to think creatively and address the strengths and weaknesses of a claim and the fine distinctions in contract language
  • Ability to conduct detailed claimant interviews
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people
  • Must be able to work on one’s own and a team environment

If you are a California resident, the salary range for this position is:

  • Southern region: $55,000 – 82,500 annually
  • Central region: $58,000 – 87,000 annually
  • Northern region: $62,000 – 93,000 annually

If you are a Colorado resident, the salary range for this position is $52,500 – 78,800 annually.


If you are a New York resident, the salary range for this position is
$62,000 – 93,000 annually.

If you are Washington resident, the salary range for this position is $58,000 – 87,000 annually.
