Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has nearly 8,000 employees working at primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory also has an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations around the globe. We are dedicated solely to the support of the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a Carpenter! Although technical skills and knowledge are essential, we are looking for a motivated and articulate carpentry professional to work in a fast paced and dynamic work group. This role requires drive, determination, and a high level of self-discipline to ensure successful project execution is accomplished on time with excellence.

Our ideal candidate is a confident team player who develops trust across stakeholders, is a clear communicator and facilitator, and demonstrates a high degree of critical thinking skills.

Lastly, the selected candidate will be required to perform the highest quality work on new and existing sophisticated carpentry components and systems. Identify and develop improvements to existing facilities or methods of operations.

Working procedure and/or responsibility assigned: The following are the usual major job duties, but this job description does not preclude the performance of other duties by the incumbent, nor the question being raised on the proper rate of pay for the assignment.

  • Determine material requirements and select appropriate materials to perform the job.
  • Receive written or oral instructions from supervision. Work from complex drawings and engineering sketches.
  • Layout, cut, fit, shape, and assemble various types of wood, metal, plastic, glass, and synthetic materials to perform tasks such as constructing partitions, cabinets, furniture, models, scaled mock-ups and nuclear containment enclosures.
  • Install a variety of floor coverings including replacing/repairing carpeting in the Laboratory offices and shops requiring the layout and preparation of floor surfaces, applying of mastic and sealer and heat sealing or fusing of butt joints as necessary.
  • Perform incidental work outside the carpentry craft jurisdiction which can be accomplished in a safe manner, within a minimal time frame, with minimal training.
  • Maintain work area and ensure equipment is clean orderly.
  • Plan, measure, cut, and install T-bars for ceiling construction and cut and install various types and styles of ceiling panels.
  • Perform equal or lower classified work as directed. Assignments of such work will be within the occupational progression insofar as possible.
  • Construct and work from scaffolds and perform on-the-job rigging as required.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate the full range of woodworking equipment and machinery required in performing carpentry functions and operate equipment such as ovens, heat sealers and sewing equipment required in working with plastic and synthetic materials.

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:

Limited contacts within the department to exchange information and receive instructions.

Limited contacts with Laboratory personnel to exchange information and receive instructions.

DIRECTION OF OTHERS

Lead, direct, and advise equal or lower classified personnel.

Must be able to work in an industrial environment, work overtime required, in addition to working in inclement weather conditions as needed.


Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • Must have completed a certified/accredited Carpentry Apprenticeship Program resulting in a certification as Journeyman Carpenter. (Required to submit certification)
  • Must have demonstrated 10yrs working in the carpentry or woodworking craft.
