Job Posting Description
The Career Development Department is currently seeking a Career Counselor for the purpose of counseling individuals and groups in various phases of the career development process. In this role, the Career Counselor will aid students with identifying and overcoming barriers to selecting a major and determining career direction, as well as with decisions relating to personal and career goals. This position seeks to administer and interpret career assessments to individuals and groups, as well as assist with writing cover letters, resumes, thank-you letters, graduate school applications, job applications, and all other forms of business correspondence related to job search. Additional responsibilities include teaching networking and interviewing skills, as well as effective internship and full-time job search strategies to individuals and groups, and conducting presentations and workshops on a variety of career-related topics.
The Career Counselor will further assist individuals by discussing effective use of career and campus resources including: informational interviewing, print and on-line materials, Cougar Jobline, career fairs and other events, departmental Co-op and internship transcript recognition availability, professional attire, and social media.
This role will perform special tasks such as Workforce Recruitment Program, Cougar Career Closet, Mentor Program, website updates, video handout, and presentation creation, social media content updates, assistance with departmental events and workshops, committee work, and representing the department at University functions.
Other duties to facilitate day-to-day operations and student success may be assigned.
This a 9-month position (August 16-May 15)
Shift Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00a-4:30p with evenings during the fall and spring semesters (10:00a-6:30p) on rotation with the other counselors and occasional weekends.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
  • One-three years' of experience with career counseling, especially in higher education
  • Master's degree in counseling, college student personnel, psychology or related degree; course work should include foundations of psychological measurements and the measurement of interest and personality.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest in working with students with disabilities and student veterans
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Familiarity with Career Services databases (12Twenty, Handshake, Simplicity)
  • Demonstrated experience with one-on-one unsupervised career planning appointments
  • Ability to present in large and small group settings
  • National certification in administering and interpreting the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
  • Demonstrated experience writing, critiquing, and reviewing student resumes
  • Event planning or project management experience in career services
  • Ability to create classroom presentations on career related topics using Power Point or other media
