The Wisconsin Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is a statewide network supporting entrepreneurs and business owners through no-cost, confidential consulting and business education. Our regional expertise is accessible to anyone anywhere across more than a dozen locations.
The Wisconsin SBDC is one of five programs at the Institute for Business & Entrepreneurship, which provides specialized resources and helps clients craft personalized plans to grow their businesses. The Institute is part of the world-class University of Wisconsin System.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Business Consultant (Official Title: Outreach Program Manager) will provide consulting services to business owners, managers, professionals and prospective entrepreneurs in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. The SBDC office is located within the Waukesha County Center for Growth, Inc. (“Center for Growth”), and this position will work daily and collaboratively with the Center for Growth Executive Director.
The position reports directly to the Division for Business and Entrepreneurship’s Associate SBDC State Director for Strategic Operations. This position requires extensive contact with people outside of the University, including business owners, managers and professionals; government and nonprofit leaders and staff; media; and the general public. Traveling occasionally within the state and working occasional evenings are required.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Small Business Consulting (75%)
The Business Consultant provides no cost, one-on-one consulting services focused on helping small business clients obtain financing, grow existing firms, improve their management and operational capabilities, and start new firms.
  • Interview prospective SBDC clients to determine their primary needs and establish the services to be provided.
  • Work toward meeting established metrics set by the Associate SBDC State Director in conjunction with other Southeast Region SBDC offices at UW-Milwaukee, UW-Parkside and UW-Whitewater, as well as the Center for Growth.
  • Focus on assisting SBDC clients with obtaining financing, financial projections and financial management.
  • Work with qualified small business owners and prospective entrepreneurs on an ongoing basis to lead to business success and economic impact.
  • Utilize SBDC best practices when working with clients to ensure quality service.
  • Be an excellent listener and have the ability to provide feedback and suggestions to clients in a
  • Work in a highly collaborative environment with the Center for Growth, and its partner organization the Waukesha County Business Alliance, as an integral part of their team.
  • Comply with all client record keeping and reporting requirements in a timely and thorough fashion and provide accurate and timely reports to the Center for Growth.
  • Use SBDC provided business analysis and strategy tools when appropriate. Training is provided.
  • Travel within Waukesha County to meet with business clients or SBDC community stakeholders at their place of business. Client meetings and follow-up will also occur via phone, e-mail and internet video. Travel to serve clients outside of Waukesha County will be required when needed.
  • Review appropriate Waukesha County client cases with the Center for Growth Executive Director.
  • Assist SBDC clients wanting to start a new business with venture feasibility analysis, business plan writing, financial projections, obtaining financing and other business start-up issues.
  • Review client cases to ensure quality standards and initial and ongoing client needs have been addressed.
  • Assist SBDC clients with existing business expansion, marketing and sales, operation management, human resources and other business management areas.
Regional Service and Pipeline Development (25%)
The Business Consultant works in concert with other community stakeholders to build a strong client referral network and collaboratively work on enhancing the development of successful businesses in Waukesha County.
  • Attend monthly Center for Growth Board meetings upon the request of the Center for Growth Executive Director.
  • Attend check-in meetings with Center for Growth Executive Director and the Business Aliance and Center for Growth staff upon request of the Center for Growth Executive Director
  • Educate your referral network in regard to other services you can provide to small businesses such as management improvement, marketing, sales and operations.
  • Assist the Center for Growth with the municipality membership recruitment and renewal process by providing data and attending municipal meetings upon the request of the Center for Growth Executive Director.
  • Work collaboratively with the Center for Growth and Business Alliance teams.
  • Serve as the lead for the Waukesha County Small Business Task Force, which will convene small business service providers on a periodic basis to ensure collaboration and sharing of best practice.
  • As appropriate, engage with the Center for Growth Business Retention & Expansion program.
  • As appropriate and in cooperation with the Center for Growth Executive Director and staff, work collaboratively with stakeholder partner agencies such as UW-Extension County agents, business alliances, regional universities and technical colleges and local governments.
  • Build an effective network of local lenders, angel groups and other professional service providers who will refer potential clients who need help preparing to obtain financing or equity capital.
  • Collaborate with the Center for Growth on small business resource education programs.
  • As appropriate and in cooperation with the Center for Growth Executive Director and staff, work collaboratively with economic and community development organizations, such as Chambers of Commerce, Main Street programs, downtown business groups or others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must demonstrate the ability and means to meet the travel requirements
  • Experience and knowledge of business finances (preparing financial projections, interpreting, and analyzing financial statements), marketing, sales, operations and management
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related field
  • NASBITE Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) credential or be willing to obtain within six months of employment
  • Demonstrated management or business unit level experience addressing complex business problems and/or business ownership experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Customer service oriented, possessing effective oral and written communication skills to proactively work with business owners to identify challenges and opportunities and help craft solutions
  • Comfort writing and reviewing business and marketing plans
  • Results orientated, working with people across a number of outside organizations in a collaborative environment

WORK LOCATION
This position will serve businesses in Waukesha County. It is preferred the successful candidate live in Waukesha County, but not required.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The Business Consultant (Official Title: Outreach Program Manager) is a full-time, salaried, exempt, academic staff position. Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $65,000 - $80,000 commensurate with the candidate’s education, related experience, and qualifications.
