Job Description
Job Title:

Part-time Bus Monitor (Split shift times are 6:30 a.m.-9a.m. and 2p.m.-4:30p.m.). Position is only for the 2023-2024 school year.

The purpose of the Bus Monitor is to assist students while they are being transported to and from school; and to provide a consistent environment, discipline and guidance for the students while they are on the bus.

Reports To: Director of Transportation

Major Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance.
  • Monitor student behavior for the purpose of diffusing situations and/or preventing distraction to the driver or injury to themselves or other students/passengers.
  • Develop positive relationships with students, school staff, and parents.
  • Be vigilant and alert to student activity while on the bus as well as at the bus stop.
  • Report observations and incidents (e.g., discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to the School Safety and Transportation departments.
  • Report any actions taken by students to initiate a confrontation, disruption or disturbance.
  • Communicate and remind students of bus safety requirements, school rules and provide general behavioral guidance to students while on the bus.
  • Respond to and report emergency situations for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns.
  • Work as a team with the bus driver to create and achieve positive behavior standards on the bus.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and understanding of children
  • Possess maturity and ability to understand appropriate interactions with others
  • Possess a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy and good judgment in dealing with students, faculty and parents.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to properly analyze situations and adopt effective course(s) of action
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Split shift availability necessary
Period of Employment: nine and one-half (9.5) months annually.
