Job Description
Twin Cities PBS (TPT) is one of the most innovative public media organizations in the country. The Broadcast Engineer is an experienced broadcast/IT professional who designs, documents, upgrades, repairs, operates, and changes multi-platform systems. This person is also responsible for new system designs and implementation; this includes specifying the hardware and software to meet TPT’s needs as well as managing the roll out of new equipment and systems. The Broadcast Engineer will engage with other Engineering team members to drive innovation in the broadcast operations of TPT, and operate a diverse array of file-based and live video production systems.

  • Starting salary: $36 - $43 per hour (depending on qualifications).

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Video Systems Engineering (75% of time)

  • Make recommendations and action plans for equipment maintenance, purchases, and policies and procedures for video implementation.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory, maintenance schedule, and repair logs of video system components.
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance, break fix, and system calibration to guarantee optimum performance at all times. You’ll keep documents updated (e.g., line drawings, SOPs, and service agreements) and assist with system design and specification of gear for various projects.
  • Diagnose issues in file-based workflows including video, audio, and captions.
  • Provide professional technical integration, evaluation, support, and repairs of all components of video systems, which include operations, equipment repairs, and maintenance.
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal Production teams.
  • Configure and troubleshoot video production and live streaming systems.
  • Maintain a high level of current and competent industry safety standards and practices for safe event operations.
  • Operate various equipment to support TPT productions
  • Create system documentation including signal flow diagrams and operation manuals.
  • Engage internal stakeholders to plan, procure, install, configure, and test new systems.
  • Respond to emergency situations and be prepared to repair production equipment as they relate to live broadcast and video systems.
  • Manage projects from concept to documentation.

Other Duties as Assigned (25% of time)

  • Participate as an active member of the Engineering Team. Contribute to shared goals and collaborate with colleagues on achievement of priorities.
  • Make recommendations and implement action plans for equipment maintenance, purchases, and policies and procedures for video implementation for capital investment.
  • Research new products, solutions, and technologies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Experience

  • 5 years of experience accurately operating and repairing equipment under the pressure of live production.
  • 5 years of work experience in video systems engineering including knowledge of video, audio and captioning file formats; associated transcoding systems; video streaming compression systems; as well as PC and Macintosh computing platforms.
  • 5 years of technical production work in linear/non-linear broadcasts
  • Hands-on experience with servers, virtual machines, storage, and networking equipment
  • 5 years of In-depth experience and knowledge in technology and broadcast productions.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with audiovisual systems, including Crestron and Biamp.
  • 6+ years of experience in video systems engineering including knowledge of video, audio and captioning file formats; associated transcoding systems; video streaming compression systems; as well as PC and Macintosh computing platforms.
  • 1+ years of experience working with SMPTE 2110.
  • Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant technology field.
  • 1+ years of experience working with ATSC 3.0.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Ability to focus on production and end user needs.
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite – Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, Teams, Visio; the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Expert knowledge of current and familiarity with emerging broadcast technologies.
  • This position requires occasional night and weekend work.
  • Ability to travel to locations in the greater metro area on an occasional basis.
  • Proficiency in evaluating, troubleshooting, installing and maintaining broadcast equipment and IT systems.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. Able to multitask in a fast-paced, time sensitive engineering environment.
  • Full color vision acuity is required for precise color matching of cameras and displays.
  • Refined communication skills: verbal, written, presentation, and listening—able to frame issues, summarize information, and connect across all levels.
  • Knowledge of video editing, production, and content creation
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage projects and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of broadcast signal flows.
  • Outstanding attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with all team members, as well as internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to lift and carry approximately 50 lbs., and work from a ladder or elevating lift.
