BASICS Facilitator (temporary, part-time) – Student Health Services – Georgetown University
Georgetown University’s BASICS Program provides evidence-based alcohol interventions with undergraduate students. leading both of the two-program BASIC sessions, with oversight provided by Patrick Kilcarr, Ph.D.
BASICS Program Description: The Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) is a student-centric program that focuses on assisting students with making informed choices about alcohol to ensure they have personal and academic success at Georgetown University.
BASICS is an opportunity for students to examine their drinking behavior in a non-judgmental environment and take the lead in a collaborative format to develop personalized strategies that reduce alcohol-related issues. BASICS is not an abstinence-only program. Instead, the goals are selected by the student and aimed at reducing risky behaviors and potential harmful consequences. Services provided through BASICS are non-judgmental, non-labeling, and confidential.
BASICS involves the completion of online assessments by each student and two individual meetings about two weeks apart. The first session takes approximately 30 minutes, and the second session takes approximately 45 minutes. During the initial session, the students discuss their alcohol use patterns, history, and related issues and, what they would like to see different or change in their life (even if is not related to drinking). The second session provides the students with personalized feedback based on the assessment and focuses on ways to reduce future risk by examining the role the student would like alcohol to play in his/her life, and strategies the student would feel comfortable using to reduce alcohol-related consequences to create the degree of change they mentioned in session one.
