GENERAL PURPOSE: Responsible for conducting comprehensive investigations of the history of potential Department employees in order to establish the veracity of information provided on employment applications and personal history statements and to determine the suitability of candidates for employment.
Salary for this position is $37.10 per hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: By following up on information offered by the candidate in a personal history statement, determine the veracity of the information.
Contact in person, personal and professional references listed by candidates to make inquiries as to their suitability for employment. In the event it is not practical to make personal contact with the reference, the investigator may contact by mail or telephone.
Establish references and contacts not listed by the candidate in order to secure information which will project an accurate image of the candidate’s work ethic, criminal activity, financial responsibility, education, and other aspects of the candidate’s life.
Travel to locations previously and currently listed as residence and places of employment to interview those familiar with candidates’ history.
Solicit information regarding candidates in the form of questionnaires to be included in final report.
Maintain a log on the background investigation checklist of the activities of the investigator and to keep track of references, inquiries and responses.
Collect personal documents and certified copies of personal documents for verification of authenticity.
Take candidate’s fingerprints for submittal to CBI and FBI for criminal history checks.
Complete submittal quality report on findings of background investigation and submit summary report of areas of interest and/or areas of concern to personnel sergeant.
Utilize other than traditional methods for gathering information including Internet, Personal Information data companies, personal records, court records, utility/services records, etc.
OTHER DUTIES: As assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid Colorado driver's license. Ability to conduct interviews with candidates and references that result in the securing of necessary information. Ability to assemble orderly and comprehensive reports as outlined in the background investigation manual. Demonstrated knowledge of proper background investigative techniques, resources and protocol as outlined in background manual and in training. Demonstrated knowledge of values and personal qualities required for employment in order to make judgments regarding suitability of candidate for employment. Word processing skills required to complete suitable reports.
EDUCATION: 12-hour training for background investigation.
EXPERIENCE: Temporary/part time candidates must have sufficient experience in general investigator or background investigation and must be approved by the Chief of Police. These candidates may be former officers/professional staff members who separated/retired from the agency in good standing. Must be a retired Sworn Law Enforcement official within the last 5 years.
MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT USED: Word processor, computer, reference books (Guide to Background Investigation, Law enforcement directories), FAX machine, telephone.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: Most work performed in office setting. Frequently travels by car to location where personal interviews are conducted (may include out of state travel).
