Job Description

Purpose: An Auto Body Paint Prep Technician provides technical preparation such as inspecting, surface preparation, and bonding of carbon fiber components or other surfaces in order to get them ready for assembly and painting.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Look for ways to improve and promote quality, monitors your own work to ensure quality, and applies feedback
  • Masks and protects parts that are not to be painted or coated
  • Selects and mixes coating liquid to produce the desired color
  • Adheres to all requirements for hazardous waste disposal
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Knows how to properly sand, featheredge and prep for paint
  • Keeps work area clean
  • Complies with all laws and regulations pertaining to paint, thinners, and other hazardous materials. Reports any deviations to management.
  • Consistently utilizes all required safe equipment and follows proper refinishing procedures in compliance with OSHA guidelines
  • Maintains and wears all required safety and health personal protective equipment, including a respirator, in the manner recommended by the equipment manufacturer
  • Mixes primer, paint, and surface treatments in accordance with specifications
  • Prepares surface for bonding and aesthetics
  • Maintains tools and keeps equipment clean and in a proper state of repair
  • Operates and uses all painting equipment in accordance with safety standards
  • Inspects primed/painted units for quality of workmanship
  • Fills cavities with putty to attain a smooth surface
  • Cooperates and assists other personnel in the repair and prepping of vehicles

Job Type: Non-exempt, Full-time

Regular Hours of work: Normal Business Hours 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Mon-Fri; Weekends and Holidays as scheduled by Management

Education & Experience Required:
  • Minimum high school diploma or GED
  • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three (3) to six (6) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software
  • Minimum of 2-3 years experience in composite manufacturing
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines
  • Must be able to use painting equipment and small hand tools, sanders, rivet guns, drills, manual routers, adhesive applicators, calipers, gauges, and other measuring devices
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to read directions/blueprints/drawings
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Positive attitude can do attitude
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stairs), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery surfaces), bending, reaching, handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning to pick, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, pallet jacket, etc.) in a safe manner. While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, etc.), gloves, and hearing protection. Work duties may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer and/or the ability to travel by air or auto. This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure the successful operation of activities in the organization. Some positions entail working with small parts/components. Employees must have excellent hand-eye coordination and good manual dexterity in both hands. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
