Job Description
  • Prepares periodic reports on various components of the athletic program.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from staff and outside agencies.
  • Enforces the requirements related to academic and other eligibility for secondary- school age students
  • Maintains positive school-community relations through regular and clear communications about the District’s athletics program, in collaboration with the Communications Department.
  • Cultivates and develops ongoing relationships and partnerships with local youth sports organizations to enhance and build the athletic program of the District.
  • Ability to use telephone and greet visitors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, coaches and the school community.
  • Ability to apply advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Develops and maintains yearly departmental budget, including review and management of requisitions, purchases, and collection of funds.
  • Represents the Reading School District at all extracurricular athletic meetings and keeps abreast of all PIAA and District III matters.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Administration, Education, or Business required
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions and concerns from management, professional and support staff and the Board of School Directors.
  • Plans and supervises recognition programs for all athletic activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
  • Ensures that District-owned and/or utilized playing fields, gymnasiums, and locker rooms are kept in proper condition for games and practices in accordance with PIAA regulations, in collaboration with the Facilities Department.
  • Assumes responsibility for the logistics of all interscholastic athletic events, including organization, scheduling of practices and competition, and any necessary transportation of District athletes, personnel, and spectators, as warranted.
  • 3 years experience serving as an Athletic Director or 5 years experience as Assistant Director experience in public K-12 institution required
  • Administers the insurance program concerning school athletes and assumes responsibility for all processing of reports and claims.
  • Working knowledge of PIAA rules and regulations required
  • Develops, organizes, and administers a multi-year plan to ensure a strong, competitive interscholastic athletics program for students of secondary-school age, including intramural opportunities for all students.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of interpersonal skills as a representative of administration.
  • Develops and implements an effective system for maintaining crowd control at home events, in collaboration with the Safe Schools Department.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing an operating budget required
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Coordinates programs that are sold at home athletic events.
  • Helps arrange for visiting teams’ needs, including lodging, meals, gymnasium services, field assistance and emergency care, as appropriate.
  • Bilingual/biliterate in Spanish/English, preferred.
  • Supervises refreshment stands at home athletic events.
  • Provides leadership in the selection, assignment, on-boarding, supervision, and periodic evaluation, as warranted, of all athletic staff, including coaches, trainers, ticket takers, timekeepers, and equipment managers, in collaboration with the Human Resources Department.
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize Microsoft and Google-Suite products in a professional setting, with ability to learn other necessary technology platforms/products appropriate to the position.
  • 3-5 years scholastic coaching experience preferred
  • Ability to write reports, correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Master’s degree in Sports Management, Education Administration, or Athletic Administration, or Business Administration preferred
  • Ability to promote the Reading School District Athletic Program and Reading High School to the greater Berks County area and beyond.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions for practical situations.
  • Develops an athletic handbook that identifies essential information for all student athletes and their families relevant to rules and responsibilities for student-athletes in in the Reading School District
