The Cell Therapy team at Janssen Therapeutics Discovery is seeking a highly motivated lab-based Associate Scientist to join our Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) Screening and Discovery team. The Associate Scientist I will join a cross-functional group of experts building a high throughput CAR screening pipeline for autologous and iPSC-derived effector cell types.


The ideal candidate is an organized, self-driven scientist that thrives in a collaborative team-based environment, is excited to learn and has experience setting up in vitro functional assays to measure T cell function using both representative cell lines and primary human cells. Key activities will include performing in-vitro functional assays for large scale screening of CAR candidates, immune cell phenotyping through multi-color flow cytometry & cell line maintenance. Any experience in immunology, cell therapy and/or immuno-oncology is a plus but not required.

Key Responsibilities


  • Design and complete experiments based on protocols.
  • Master’s degree in Life Sciences (e.g. Biology, Biotechnology) or a related field with 1-2 years of academic and/or industry experience is required.
  • Maintain a detailed, accurate, complete, and up-to-date laboratory notebook
  • Coordinate experimental activities with other team members to deliver results that meet pre-defined timelines.
  • Assist in CAR T cell generation, expansion, characterization, and cryopreservation.
  • Complete multi color immune cell phenotyping and FACS analysis.
  • Data generation, analysis, maintenance, and communication to immediate team and cross-functional teams.
  • Thaw, culture and maintain a variety of mammalian cell lines using aseptic technique.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data.
Experience and Skills:


  • Highly self-motivated with excellent communication and scientific problem-solving skills is required.
  • Experience with in vitro cell culture: aseptic technique, cell-line culturing, freezing and thaw is required.
  • Ability to independently perform lab-based responsibilities with limited guidance is required.
  • Ability to collaborate with others to plan experiments and coordinate frequent hand-offs of cell lines and data packages to members of other teams is required.
  • Excellent record keeping and documentation skills as well as experience using ELN systems is a plus.
  • Willingness to think creatively, be flexible and able to work in a fast paced, changing environment is highly desired.
  • Experience with multi-color flow cytometry (8-10 colors) and downstream data processing/analysis (FlowJo/Prism) is preferred.
  • Experience working with immune cell types such as murine or human T cells is preferred, and any experience with NK cells or Gamma Delta T cells is a plus.
  • Experience with functional characterization such as cytotoxicity assays (Incucyte), proliferation assays and cytokine measurements through MSD is preferred.
