Position Description
This is a remote position and can be based anywhere within the U.S.
Job Summary
Develops and edits medical and scientific information as part of a comprehensive public-facing cancer information delivery system. Addresses health equity and health literacy by leading the development and/or adaptation of print- and web-based cancer information to address information gaps based on the unique needs of special populations, and other projects that aim to enhance and improve existing cancer information. Serves as a knowledgeable advanced clinician and oncology patient care resource to the organization.
Major Responsibilities
  • Works with leadership at NCIC to identify learning needs of staff and to develop strategies to address needs and ongoing education.
  • Addresses and adopts evidence-based health equity principles through multidisciplinary and multiteam collaboration as a health equity ambassador.
  • Maintains integrity of content to ensure consistency with ACS guidelines, policies, and philosophy.
  • Acts as consultant and collaborative leader for mission priorities, partnerships, and special projects..
  • Uses readability formulas and assessment tools to review, revise, and develop cancer information to be understandable and actionable by various audiences [e.g., SMOG, Fry, Flesch, Reading Ease, Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM), PE-MAT, CDC Clear Communication Index].
  • Assists in managing print-based patient educational inventory and processes, and serves as liaison with contracted inventory vendors.Focusing on priority special populations, assists in the development of new methods of educating various audiences about oncology issues.
  • Leads the development of new patient, caregiver, and public-facing cancer content for special populations based on mission priorities for multichannel delivery.
  • Provides as-needed support for questions from National Cancer Information Center (NCIC).
  • Assists with editing and review of cancer-related content for all audiences across the cancer continuum, including content for the Society’s website www.cancer.org, internal databases used by the Society’s National Cancer Information Center (NCIC), ACS-supported websites, publications, promotional assets, and educational pamphlets.
  • Ensures and maintains accurate content that is current and balanced.
  • Makes corrections, recommendations, and suggestions for editorial changes in existing content as appropriate.
  • Critically evaluates medical literature to assess reliability and relevance of findings.
  • Other projects as necessary.
  • Co-leads the integration and ongoing evaluation of evidence-based health literacy best practices.
  • Implements and leads the integration of content that addresses the unique cancer-related needs of special populations.
  • Assesses and addresses identified gaps and unmet learning needs for special populations that consider the intended audience’s characteristics, challenges, and interests.
Position Requirements
FORMAL KNOWLEDGE
  • Cancer prevention, risk reduction, and/or survivorship care management for a variety of patient populations, such as older adults, AYA, LGBTQ+, rural, immigrant, veteran, prisoner populations
  • Oncology nursing certification (OCN)
  • Knowledge of current clinical oncology trends and issues.
  • Master’s degree in nursing and RN licensure
  • Minimum of 8 years’ recent clinical oncology nursing experience
  • Knowledge of health literacy as a component of health equity, needs of special populations, and use of plain language in writing and communication.
  • Required:
  • Advanced oncology nursing certification (AOCN, AOCNP, AOCNS)
  • Preferred:
  • Doctoral degree (DNP or PhD) with APRN licensure that includes prescriptive authority experience
Other Skills
  • Experience in engaging and managing relationships with external partners, subject matter experts, and volunteers.
  • Expertise in the direct management of cancer treatment, side effects, and survivorship care for a variety of patient populations.
  • Excellent collaboration and leadership skills in team environment with physician medical editors, other medical professionals, support staff, translators, and.
  • Ability to communicate medical/scientific information and responses to complex medical questions in plain language based on unique needs of different audiences and priority special populations for people at high school grade levels and lower.
  • Knowledge of AMA style and referencing standards, and other editorial styles as well as readability and health literacy best practices..
  • Adept in Microsoft Word, Excel and searching electronic databases.
  • Ability to perform extensive literature searches and apply evidence to practice.
  • Excellent medical writing skills and computer/Internet literacy, with proficiency in editorial and analytical abilities.
  • Experience interacting with internal stakeholders including researchers, subject matter experts, marketing and communications, creative teams, SEO and user experience.
  • Creative thinker.
  • Commitment to patient education, health equity, health literacy, and customer service, serving as a clinical oncology expert and voice of the cancer patient and their caregivers.
  • Knowledge of content management and project management systems; experience with Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) preferred.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage and track multiple projects simultaneously.
SPECIAL MENTAL OR PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to work remotely at an in-home office for full work days.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • Ability to travel occasionally when necessary.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
The starting rate is $89,000 - $105,000. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
