UW Medicine Advancement has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director for Philanthropy.

In the 2022 fiscal year, UW Medicine Advancement raised $284 million in gifts and private grants (46 percent of the University of Washington’s total) from nearly 14,000 donors to support the mission of UW Medicine.
The Associate Director for Philanthropy (payroll title: Development Officer), as part of a dynamic major gift fundraising team, focuses on securing major gifts ($25,000+), and cultivating donors who have the capacity to give at that level. The Associate Director will work with academic and hospital leaders, volunteers, and other staff to identify, cultivate, and solicit major gift prospective donors for gifts in support of UW Medicine. The Associate Director will have assigned responsibility for oversight and coordination of major gift fundraising programs that support UW Medicine Eye Institute and other departments and/or programs as assigned.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct Fundraising Responsibilities:
  • Make 9-10 personal cultivation/solicitation/stewardship visits per month to assess the interests and capacity of potential donors. As appropriate, identify individuals as annual, major gift or planned giving prospects; solicit for gifts ($25,000 and above); and determine follow-up strategies including stewardship.

  • Cultivate longtime annual donors for planned giving possibility and work with Planned Giving colleague to prepare communication and materials for that purpose.

  • Develop and present 15-20 gift proposals each year with a target of securing an average of $1 million in new commitments.

  • Serve as a qualification officer for new leads for major gift prospects ($25,000k+) and planned gifts from prospect research, faculty referrals, prospect screening tools, donor base, and fundraising colleagues.

  • Manage a portfolio of 100-125 donor prospects ($25,000+) with a focus on those with potential of $50,000+.

  • Work with fundraising colleagues, faculty, academic leaders, administrators, and volunteers to develop cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for all prospects.

  • Collaborate with major gift officers to develop prospect pool, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts. Record and track all donor activity using the University’s prospect management and tracking system.

  • As appropriate, work with colleagues to ensure that the annual fund plan supports and dovetails with personal qualification and solicitation strategies.

  • Activities in Support of Direct Fundraising:
  • Support the development of annual operating plan including quantitative and qualitative goals and objectives. Plan should include a list of the “Top 25” prospects who will be asked in the next 12-18 months. Prepare monthly reports to track and assess progress.

  • Prepare written proposals, gift illustrations, and informational materials needed to secure major gifts.

  • Develop basic knowledge of and information resources for all areas of UW Medicine, focusing on research, patient care and education activities within the School of Medicine.

  • Ensure that all fundraising activities involving patients are compliant with the HIPAA federal privacy regulations.

  • Seek appropriate professional development opportunities.

  • Complete annual performance self-assessment as key component of Annual Review.

  • Complete other duties as assigned.

  • Lead Responsibilities
    The Associate Director for Philanthropy is a self-motivated, self-starter who spends a significant amount of time working independently out from the office and on the telephone. Based on this assignment, the Associate Director for Philanthropy must take the lead to initiate and follow through with contact with a wide variety of prospects, donors, alumni, faculty, and volunteers. The Associate Director for Philanthropy works independently to cultivate, solicit, and steward key donors.
    Supervisory Responsibilities
    While this position does not have direct supervisory responsibility, the Associate Director for Philanthropy will oversee the work of administrative staff members who are assisting with projects. Additionally, the Associate Director for Philanthropy will motivate and lead staff, faculty, alumni, and volunteers in fundraising activities.
    QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree and five or more years of increasingly responsible experience in institutional advancement with a preference for experience cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding leadership gifts.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidences and protect confidential information.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

  • Equivalent education/experience may substitute for stated requirements.

  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

    OTHER
  • As needed to implement programs, this individual will be required to work overtime. Some evening and weekend work is required.

  • Frequent local and regional travel, some national travel may be required.

  • The successful candidate will be expected to have regular, reliable transportation for local travel and be willing to travel when necessary.
