Position Summary

Position Overview
The University of Northwestern – St. Paul, Minnesota, seeks an engaging teacher and writer to join its full-time faculty beginning Fall 2023 or Spring 2024. Expertise in Creative Writing is required; additional expertise in Professional Writing or Rhetoric/Composition is also beneficial. Although the faculty member in this position may teach occasional courses in literature, the primary emphasis of the position will be on writing. This position is full-time, promotable, and eligible for extended contract. A complete application includes: (1) Faculty Application for Employment, (2) letter of interest, and (3) curriculum vitae. The Department of English & Literature offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. The English major is divided into four concentrations: literature, writing, literature and writing, and linguistics. A related Bachelor of Science in Communication Arts/Literature Education major is offered through the School of Education. Four academic minors are offered: English, linguistics, literature, and writing.

What will I do in this position?
Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Because our community is a significant part of our mission and the development of our students, all employees act as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ by actively partnering with the University to disciple students in growing intellectually and spiritually, and with Northwestern Media to lead people to Christ and nurture believers to mature in their faith.
  • Teach core Composition and Critical Thinking and Writing courses, creative and professional writing courses in the major, and other undergraduate English courses commensurate with department needs and the faculty member’s specialization.
  • Advise English majors, fulfilling assigned departmental duties, holding office hours, and attending department/faculty meetings, convocations, commencements, serving on committees, being actively involved with professional organizations, and other functions as requested by the Department Chair, College Dean, or Provost.

What will it take to succeed in this position?
Minimum Education and Experience:
  • An active agenda for creative or scholarly projects, with a significant record of publication in creative writing
  • Experience using a learning management system such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Canvas preferred
  • Experience in professional writing preferred
  • Experience teaching English, preferably at the college or university level
  • Maintain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern’s mission, doctrinal statement and Declaration of Christian Community.
  • Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in Creative Writing required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule
  • Strong knowledge base in educational foundation, instructional methods, classroom management, and teacher development required
  • Ability to interact with a variety of individuals in a professional, kind, and tactful manner
  • Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and academic advising of undergraduates
  • Ability to integrate Christian worldview into classroom instruction
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Understanding of curriculum and course development, including course and program assessment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to student success that includes recruitment and retention
