General Description:
Pacific Lutheran University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in Creative Writing (Fiction and Nonfiction) & Composition beginning September 2023. The primary responsibility of faculty is teaching; faculty are also expected to be productive scholars and university citizens.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Teach annual six-course load composed of some combination of the following: two or three introductory, intermediate, and advanced writing courses; one or two first-year writing courses in PLU’s First-Year Experience Program; and a general education literature course. In addition, there will be opportunities to teach in PLU’s other interdisciplinary programs (e.g., Environmental Studies; Global Studies; Holocaust and Genocide Studies; the International Honors program; Publishing and Printing Arts; and Gender, Race, and Sexuality Studies).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to teach introduction to college-level academic writing to a broad range of incoming, first-year students.
  • Ability to teach creative-writing workshop courses at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels.
  • Ability to teach occasional literature courses in the American, British, or global Anglophone traditions; and/or courses in PLU’s interdisciplinary programs.
  • Ability to contribute actively as a member of the Department, College, and University, by contributing to areas like: curricular development, student advising, and co-curricular student activities.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching techniques and strategies, including inclusive teaching practices.
  • Record of publication that shows promise for a sustained career as a published writer.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. or M.F.A. ABD will be considered, but degree must be in hand by September 1, 2023.
