What We Want
The Assistant Librarian will participate in routine transfers, donations, and accessioning of materials per the University Archive’s collection development policy as the Assistant University Archivist. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing reference and research assistance to users of the University Archives. The Assistant Librarian will provide guidance in services and collections for university faculty, staff, students, former students, donors, record creators, and professional colleagues. This position will also aid in the promotion, visibility, and use of archive materials through instruction, physical and online exhibits, presentation, tours, publications, and other outreach activities.

Salary: Starting at $4,583.34 a month

Required Education and Experience:
  • Master’s degree in library science or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • No prior experience required
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of customers and employees
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment with shifting priorities
  • Conflict Resolution Skills
  • Ability to use a power lift
  • Knowledge of email and word processing
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Experience with outreach, community engagement, or customer service
  • Knowledge of academic library functions
  • Knowledge of handling, preservation, and security of rare books and archival collection materials
  • Knowledge of digital archives, digital initiatives or institutional repositories
  • Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA)
  • 1 year experience working with archival and special collection materials
  • Experience of special collection methods, theories, standards, and practices
  • Experience working in an academic research library, archival repository, museum, or public history setting
  • Experience with library information technology applications and collection management systems (e.g. AtoM, ArchivesSpace, etc.)
  • Project management skills
  • Experience with archival content, structure, and metadata standards (e.g. EAD, DACS)
Responsibilities:
  • Collection Management and Processing: Participates in routine transfers, donations, and accessioning of materials per the University Archive’s collection development policy. Participates in arranging, describing, and digitizing collections. Several of the collections are stored in a warehouse facility that requires a powerlift to retrieve collection from higher spaces in the warehouse. Collaborates with colleagues on creating finding aids, and descriptive access tools. Aids in the planning, supervision, and execution of special projects. Supervises student workers and provides feedback and coaching.
  • Reference and Research Assistance: Provides reference and research assistance for users of the University Archives. Aids in the development and maintenance of LibGuides and research guides. Provides recommendations to enhance user access to collections.
  • Collaborations and Partnerships: Participates in departmental and interdepartmental meetings and activities as a member of the Archives and Special collections department. Provides guidance in services and collections. Aids in the promotion, visibility, and use of archive materials through instruction, physical and online exhibits, presentation, tours, publications, and other outreach activities. Participates in fundraising and donor relations projects.
  • Contributions to the Profession: Participates in scholarly activities and professional services for professional development and to incorporate new insights and technologies into library services and programs. Serves on campus and library committees, as well as performing other duties as assigned.
