Job Description

The Department of English Language and Literature at Gardner-Webb University is hiring a full-time Assistant Professor of English Language and Literature. The position is campus-based and carries a tenure track, 9-month renewable contract, slated to begin August 1, 2023.

The successful candidate will teach courses in Early Modern and Medieval literatures, including Shakespeare, and first-year composition courses. In addition to teaching seated undergraduate courses on our campus in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, the candidate will also teach courses in our online graduate MA in English program, according to candidate’s area of expertise.

Our undergraduate as well as graduate programs offer specializations in English education, literature, and writing. The successful candidate will become part of a department dedicated to helping students foster meaningful intellectual thought, critical analysis, and spiritual challenge through the study of composition and rhetoric, literature, creative writing, and linguistics. Gardner-Webb University is primarily a teaching institution with an expectation of research. The normal teaching load is 12 hours per semester with opportunities for course release based on research, administrative duties, and university priorities.

Qualifications include a PhD in English with an emphasis in a relevant field, experience teaching, and record of research. Preference may be given to candidates who also have secondary experience in fields such as global literature, gender and sexuality studies, disability studies, premodern critical race studies, digital humanities, or technical writing.
