Job Description
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Ambulatory Surgery Center is seeking an Assistant Nurse Manager for the ASC - OR EYE TEAM to interface with administrative and clinical nursing staff to provide leadership in improving and maintaining the delivery of care processes for the Ophthalmic Surgical Patient and to assume delegated responsibility for the implementation of daily operations for the ASC, MOR and SFCH department.
Areas Of Responsibility Include
  • Promote the adoption of Evidence Based Practices to improve clinical practice. Participate in the development of research-based standards and other research utilization activities.
  • Provide clear, succinct, and reliable communication between management and ASC staff, nurturing a shared vision of teamwork. Engage staff as stakeholders in the success of the ASC.
  • Participate in financial planning and management activities, including operational budgetary decisions. Proactively identify and communicate cost containment recommendations.
  • Promote a collaborative, team-oriented environment that unites nurses, physicians, and support staff into a dynamic work unit.
  • Serve as a champion for process improvements and similar initiatives which will further support the ASC mission, vision, and strategies.
  • Demonstrate excellent conflict management skills, and the ability to handle stressful situations appropriately. Accept and deliver constructive feedback in a positive learning manner.
  • Engage in appropriate continuous learning, including curricula focused upon development of leadership and management skills.
  • Understand and support the mission of the organization with demonstrated strong support for ASC management vision, business goals, strategies, and culture.
  • Clinical, expert in Perioperative Nursing. Regularly participate in the provision of direct patient care, including role-modeling of behaviors, processes and interactions that promote optimal patient flow, throughput, and efficiency.
  • Assume delegated responsibility in managing the day-to-day clinical operations of the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics ASC, managing the activities of all constituents who provide Ophthalmic surgical and support services within the ASC, MOR and SFCH to ensure optimal patient flow, throughput, and efficiency.
  • Assist in developing, implementing and evaluation of ASC Quality Management programs, including participation in ASC committees. Proactively identify safety issues and inefficiencies. Collaborate with ASC and Perioperative leadership to revise policies to optimize delivery of patient service. Ensure compliance with established standards of care.
  • Continuously assess and actively monitor patient care resources, including active participation in building and review of ASC staffing plans.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision is exercised over clinical and support staff members in this Assistant Nurse Manager's area in the ASC, as delegated by the Associate Director.
DIRECT SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The ASC Assistant EYE Team Nurse Manager reports to the ASC EYE team Nurse Manager, ASC operating rooms.
Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 hour shifts, on call as needed
Pay Grade: 5A

Required Qualifications
  • 3-5 years current experience in clinical practice required
  • Current ACLS certification or completion within 3 months of employment is required.
  • Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment is required.
  • A Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required.
  • Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education
  • Certification in specialty (CNOR) or completion within 2 years is required
  • Current license to practice registered nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
  • Six months - 1 year current experience in leadership role or activities required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Recent ophthalmic surgery experience highly desirable.
  • 3 years providing direct nursing care in an outpatient operating room setting with in the past 6 months.
  • Leadership experience in an ambulatory surgery environment is highly desirable.
