Position Summary

This position has complex managerial work involved in the planning, purchasing, merchandising, selling, and inventory of supplies, general merchandise and convenience items and other items for Bear Necessities. In tandem with the Retail Manager, the Assistant Manager confers with students, staff, faculty, vendors, publishers, and other representatives regarding order requests, merchandising resources and availability, purchasing timelines, costs, stock and inventory and other matters.
Experience as a store manager and buyer of diverse product classifications (logoed apparel/gifts, health and beauty supplies) and knowledge of different business areas such as sales, marketing and purchasing, are a part of the daily and strategic planning of the BNRM. An effective BNRM will also be able to hire and motivate student staff who will perform tasks according to the needs of the store, including trend style merchandising, social media marketing and will provide great customer service to the WUSTL student and campus community.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Manage and Supervise

  • Ensures the store fulfils all legal health and safety guidelines.
  • Maintains regular store inspections and resolve any issues that might arise.
  • A BN Assistant Manager is cross trained and will be able to work in all areas of the store and direct the work of student assistants.
  • Public contact and troubleshooting is extensive and includes customers -students, staff, vendors and others for the exchange of policy and procedural information.
  • Oversees store operations, delegate responsibilities to student staff.
  • Develops Student Staff weekly schedules.
  • Develops standard operating procedures manual, update and refresh annually.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and guides student staff towards maximum performance in store operations.

Financial

  • Conducts an annual report of physical inventory.
  • Determines pricing, receives, logs, prices, stocks, and stores incoming clothing, equipment and supplies, general merchandise, and convenience items.
  • Oversees the Fulfill annual PCI compliance audit and report quarterly to WSWU/Aux Business on financial status of store inventory and sales.
  • Responsible for submitting and approving payroll for Student Staff.
  • Works with the Manager in preparing and manage the store’s budget aiming for minimum expenditure and high efficiency.

Marketing

  • Supervises student marketing interns and internships for web sales and development.
  • The plan will include the organization and overseeing of in-store promotional events or displays, development and monitoring of social media posts, production of advertising for university publications, develop a promotional calendar and implement website banners and ads.
  • Creates an annual strategic plan for Bear Necessities for maximizing store sales via a calendar of marketing and events to increase in-person traffic and online ordering.

Customer Service

  • Maintains high quality customer service by welcoming and connecting with customers, discovering customer needs, and appropriately suggesting products to enhance service and meet goals, responding to customer needs, and thanking customers.
  • Engages with customers and address any customer concerns to ensure the best shopping experience.

Assistant Buyer

  • Keeps the Manager abreast of market trends to determine the need for improvements in the store.
  • Receives, monitors, reports all shipments into Point-Of-Sale (POS) database for sales & inventory.
  • Stays in contact with vendors and shippers.
  • Develops assortment plans to purchase products and maintain inventory; analyze sales, revenue reports and trends to make forecasts.

Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Collegial leader, strong team orientation and mentoring skills.
  • Must have ability to determine Open To Buy (OTB) and maintain store budget.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of resource and product trends.
  • Effective problem solver, accomplished and effective communicator, both written and verbal.
  • Preferred experience with a minimum of two years of higher education experience working at a branded apparel store.
  • Experience with budget development and data entry related to POS (Unify) and data analysis to create reports for administrative review.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field and two years of experience as a retail store manager or equivalent education and experience to equal six years.

Salary Range

$43,400.00 - $71,700.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
