JOB TITLE: Assistant Garden Manager
REPORTS TO: Garden Manager, District Manager
FLSA CLASS: Hourly Non-Exempt

The job duties described below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required for the position. All employees may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time as needed.

Description of the Position
This is a full-time year around position for a highly motivated and organized individual who has a passion for plants, gardens and the landscape. The primary responsibility for the Assistant Garden Manager is to assist the Garden Manager in overseeing the daily operation of the department, employees, and the grounds throughout the year with jobs varying from season to season. The position requires excellent communication and coordinating skills to work effectively with employees, management, property departments, and contractual workers. This position requires assisting and/or overseeing employees by delegating tasks through various communication systems within the department, e.g., maintaining and providing maintenance checklists, record keeping, work schedules, and seeing to staff’s work is performed correctly and is completed. The Assistant Manager will be expected to assist in all duties required of the Garden Department as directed by the Garden Manager.

The tasks to achieve in the gardens and department operations will include: weed management through the best method for control or eradication, additionally, this will include the outskirts of the property. Weed management methods will include; hand weeding, mechanical equipment, sheet mulching, or herbicide application. Soil care for the property gardens through mulching, composting, soil amendments, cover cropping, and wood chips. Various irrigation systems maintained, operated, and installed. Small equipment and tractor operation and maintenance. All phases of lawn care, pruning of ornamental plants and fruit bearing plants, detection and treatment of pests and disease, fertilizing, hardscape maintenance and installation, and specific cultural care for a diverse, large plant collection. This position will be responsible for overseeing tree care, the department operations of tools and supplies, and light construction with the use of operating power tools.

This position necessitates prolonged physical work, the ability to lift 50 lbs., perform repetitive tasks, and exposure to outdoor weather conditions throughout the year. The position requires effective multi-tasking in an occasionally fast-paced environment, working often within a limited time frame to accomplish garden tasks of the season. The Assistant Manager must be able to work both independently and as a team member. Each employee is expected to perform their job in a safe manor and report any safety concerns to Management. All McMenamin employees will also be expected to keep current on all company events, history and products. Additional duties may be assigned by the Garden Manager or Property Manager.

Requirements of the Job

  • Knowledge of turf grass management
  • An ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Experience with programming, operating, and maintenance of automatic irrigation systems.
  • An ability to work well independently and within a team
  • Knowledge of sustainable soil management and methods
  • Knowledge of Pacific N.W. weeds, beneficial insects, pests, and diseases.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experiences directly managing, or directly assisting the management of a multi-acre, multi-use large scale estate/campus. Or a degree in Horticulture or Landscape Technology with a minimum of one-year garden management in a multi-acre setting.
  • An ability to effectively direct, oversee, and schedule garden staff, and contractual workers
  • Experience with operating landscape equipment; light duty tractor, weed eater, blower, edger, tiller
  • Familiar with I.P.M., biological control, and environmentally sound practices for effectively reducing or mitigating pests in the ornamental landscape.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse and nursery production and propagation
  • Basic computer skills, familiar with EXCEL
  • A thorough level of Pacific Northwest plant knowledge to encompass conifers, broadleaved evergreens, temperate fruit, herbaceous perennials, grasses, annuals, vegetables, groundcovers, herbs, weed identification and the corresponding cultural care or management.

Essential Function of Job

  • Work for long periods outdoors in all weather, including walking, stooping, climbing ladders up to 10 ft. height.
  • Safely lift and carry heavy objects with a hand truck or with the help of another person when necessary
  • Attention to detail including care of tools, potential safety hazards in the landscape, being mindful of plantings while working in garden beds
  • Ability to cooperate and communicate positively, clearly, and professionally with co-workers, managers, and contractors
  • Frequent, sustained, repetitive movement (e.g., pushing, pulling, lifting, dragging, digging, climbing, bending, stooping, twisting, carrying of backpack equipment)
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Manipulate large and small objects including garden tools, seeds, hardware, and equipment
  • Must have a value for diversity and the ability to work with individuals from different backgrounds
  • Proper operation of all garden-related tools and equipment
  • Effectively and efficiently maintain the landscape with excellent and thoughtful gardening practices
