Job Description

Duties

The purpose of this Assistant Director position is to lead the NMAH-wide communication and marketing strategy, including the development and management of all aspects of internal and external communications, public and media relations activities, social media, marketing, editorial services, and development of new messaging and engagement strategies.

In this position, you will:

  • Plan and direct the execution of short- and long-range communications plans to support the mission, goals, and vision of the National Museum of American History (NMAH).
  • Monitor effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of social media programs and press; and analyze, review and report on the effectiveness of campaigns in efforts to maximize results.
  • Develop and implement communication plans that integrate all aspects of the Museum’s external and internal communications; develop, shape, and lead decision making about print and digital media content; develop and implement marketing plans; and identify and support key-related projects for new and existing exhibitions, programs, events, and community initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with groups of social media stakeholders that provide strategic information flow between departments and senior leadership across the organization.
  • Coach and counsel staff to ensure a civil work environment and relationship with colleagues and contractors.
  • Encourage a team-based approach to project planning and implementation; and readjust work schedules to meet priorities or changing needs.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as 1) Working with public information or public relations in a museum, large cultural institution or similar organization; 2) Leading and motivating a team of professionals in public relations, communications, marketing, design, and web and social media; and 3) Developing and maintaining long- and short- term strategic planning.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job related competencies below:

  • Expert knowledge of press, communications, and public relations to promote a positive image of the National Museum of American History with the public media and press and to respond to controversial and potentially reputation damaging issues.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining media contacts to raise interest, place articles/features, and position NMAH as a source of interest and news. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of media relations, public affairs, marketing, and branding.
  • Expert skill in the supervision and/or management of a multi-disciplinary communications team; including public affairs, social media, and/or an editorial staff.
  • Skill to create and grow a social media team and demonstrated mastery of social media methods, techniques, and data analysis across all social media platforms.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category.
