Job Description
Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located at the National Museum of the American Latino (NMAL), Smithsonian Institution (SI). NMAL is a national museum dedicated to enriching the appreciation of America's Latino heritage and empowering Latino American communities in their sense of inclusion with the national culture. Responsibilities The Assistant Director, Digital Initiatives heads digital initiatives through strategic planning, program management, and strategic partnerships. In this position, you will: Spearhead the vision, development, and implementation of a digital-first strategy to support NMAL mission and goals. Research emerging trends and identify opportunities for the museum to extend its programs and enhance its mission through technology. Advise NMAL on new web technologies, new media products, social media platforms, and new ways to build and extend the NMAL mission and branding to a virtual and physical environment. Gather, interpret, and report analytics and evaluation results and implementing or testing recommendations for improvement. Spearhead exhibition content research and development for digital media experiences both onsite and online. Oversee the management of the museum’s digital budget, including identification of short and long-term investment areas based on budgetary constraints and budget needs. Provide effective and efficient supervision of a combination of Trust and Federal positions. Requirements Conditions of Employment Requires career/career-conditional status or eligibility. Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service. May be required to serve an 18-month probationary period for supervisors. Please Note: This position requires fluency in written and spoken Spanish. Qualifications Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as leading the development and implementation of digital strategic plans and programs; directing museum media content research, creation, and development on subjects of American Latino heritage for diverse audiences; and managing media, AV/IT, and production staff. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Please Note: This position requires fluency in written and spoken Spanish.
