Job Description

Under direct supervision of the Head Coach of the football team, the Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in the management and administration of the sports program and team. Understands the organizational culture, the role of athletics within the Simpson University community, and a willingness to consistently perpetuate and display the mission of Simpson through actions and words with athletes, coaches, university personnel and general public.


Qualifications:

  • Playing experience and/or student assistant experience in respective sport
  • Ability to maintain a strong Christ centered culture for student-athletes within their team activities
  • General proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, etc.)
  • Ability to use personal computer, social media, and office equipment to enhance relations to enhance teaching and instruction of student-athletes
  • Strong ability to recruit, coach and develop student-athletes.
  • Ability to complete tasks that have set deadlines
  • Be able to establish and maintain effective relationships with department peers, respective head coach, and student-athletes.
  • Bachelor's degree in sports management, physical education, athletic coaching, recreation or another related field required; Master's degree preferred
  • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  • Ability to scout opponents and break down game tapes for purposes of instruction to student-athletes.
  • High school or 1-3 years intercollegiate coaching experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively – orally, by phone, in person, and in writing.
  • Ability to serve as a strong Christian role model/mentor for student athletes and actively contribute to the spiritual development of athletes
  • Must have and maintain valid California driver's license and be able and willing to travel

  • Support the overflow needs of other departments within the respective university area

Essential Functions:

  • Be knowledgeable and tutor student-athletes in national, conference, and institutional rules and regulations to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Assist in the implementation of the academic program including tutoring and monitoring of individual student-athlete progress to ensure academic eligibility, enforcement of study hall program, and providing referrals to the appropriate university resources.
  • Prepare plans for personalized instruction of student-athletes to be taught by the assistant coach during in-season and off-season. Instructional plans encompass in-season, off-season, and summer activities for student-athlete(s). Areas include technical aspect of sport, film study, sport research, and total athlete development.
  • Assists with recruiting including calling prospective student-athletes, evaluating high school and junior college players, maintaining an accurate database for identification of potential successful student-athletes.
  • Instruct during practice sessions or workouts as assigned; may be assigned to work with a specific group of student-athletes on a regular basis. Assist in coaching during athletic events.
  • Attend seminars, conferences, and professional development opportunities for personal growth and the enhancement of student-athlete instruction.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit regular attendance at all team meetings, practices, and games
  • Give input to award winners, needed budget items, and budget preparation
  • Accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by Head Coach and/or Director of Athletics
  • Assist the head coach in accumulating accurate records, player information and game statistics
  • Help with responsibility of equipment and uniform issuing and care
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques in the sport by attending clinics, reading new information, and networking with other coaches in the profession
  • Communicate effectively the rules of the sport to the players
  • Help administer the athletic study halls or tutoring for student-athletes who need the extra help
  • Help emphasize proper safety procedures in training for the sport and keep abreast of injury procedures
