General Summary of Position

We are currently seeking enthusiastic applicants who are prepared to help
create a new and innovative approach to community history.
As an Assistant Archivist, you will join the Museum and Archives Manager and the staff of the Door County Historical Museum to transform the Door County Archives into a fully public-facing institution.

The Assistant Archivist will conduct the day-to-day records management activities of the Door County Archives. In addition, the Assistant Archivist will aid in the creation and implementation of Door County Archives exhibits and programs, provide customer service to visitors to the Archives, and perform other Archives-related tasks under the supervision of the Museum and Archives Manager. This position is responsible for providing truthful and accurate written and verbal communications.

While initial work will take place at the Sturgeon Bay branch of the Door County Library, future activities will be focused on moving the Archives to a new, permanent home.

Essential & General Job Functions

Essential Job Functions

  • Organize, catalog and digitize archival materials to a professional standard.
  • Work closely with county departments and their needs.
  • Assist the Museum and Archives Manager in creating and implementing Archives programs.
  • Research, as necessary, historical and genealogical materials.
  • Participate in collaborative projects relating to Door County history.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned or directed.

General Job Functions
  • Collaborate with other groups and attend monthly Museum/Archives staff meetings and other related meetings as requested.
  • Outreach – present programs and events to the community and serve as a representative for the museum and its mission.

Training, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Required Training and Experience

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Bachelor's Degree in history or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft and Google applications.
Preferred Training and Experience
  • Previous experience working with archival materials.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Ability to organize and describe diverse archival materials.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Door County history.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn historical and genealogical research methods.
  • Ability to present programs to the community.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work well either as a member and/or leader of a team.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use tact and courtesy in maintaining an effective working relationship with department employees, county supervisors, county officials, and the general public.
