Job Description
The New England Aquarium is seeking a full-time temporary Assistant Aquarist to assist with general husbandry needs in support of increasing larval program work at our Animal Care Center in Quincy, MA. The ideal candidate will have some basic animal husbandry experience, such as food preparation, feeding, and system maintenance.


SCHEDULE


This is a full-time, temporary position starting in June. We expect the position to last for 6 months. The schedule will be 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM; Monday-Friday. Candidates will be required to work holidays that fall within the schedule.


Essential Functions


  • In conjunction with the Environmental Quality Department, assists in managing water quality and environmental parameters in assigned exhibits and holding tanks.
  • Assists with the coordination of volunteer staff.
  • Depending on the assignment may be routinely expected to engage with the public through in-person or virtual presentations.
  • Makes daily observations of animals for health assessment according to established norms of animals' behavior and appearance. Reports suspected incidence of disease and/or changes in health to an appropriate staff member(s).
  • Maintains written and electronic records and submits entries via NEAq's specimen database system TRACKS©. Typical entries include accessions, dispositions, moves, behaviors, mortalities, and LSS maintenance in accordance with proper husbandry practices and institutional policy.
  • Provides alternate coverage for other Aquarists and is available for cross-training, as assigned.
  • As directed, provides daily care of assigned exhibits, holding areas and life support systems according to established standards of appearance and animal care.


Qualifications


Minimum Training and Experience


  • Experience with aquatic animals preferred.
  • A high school diploma and 3 months of animal husbandry or related experience are required (paid or volunteer).


Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
