Department Description


The department delivers patient care through provision and management of fiscal, materiel, and human resources; technological support; planning and coordinating surgical care with the medical and paramedical staff to effectively manage patients for surgical intervention. This position is directly responsible in providing technical support pre-, intra- and post-procedure to anesthesia providers in all service areas including, but not limited to: Pavilion Operating Room, UT2 OR, Same Day Surgery Center, Children’s Surgery Center, Labor and Delivery, Interventional Radiology, Cancer Center, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Cardiac Cath Lab, EP lab, G. I. Lab, Neonatal ICU, CT Suites, SICU and MRI.

Responsibilities
Anesthesia Technicians are responsible for maintaining all anesthesia service areas in readiness for use by Anesthesiologist and Anesthetists. Incumbents are responsible for anesthesia equipment and supplies; work independently and be able to make decisions and set priorities with some guidance; responsible for knowledge of and compliance with all applicable infection control, health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the institution; may assist Anesthesiologists with patient positioning, preparation of sterile fields, placement of invasive monitoring lines, application of regional, epidural and spinal anesthesia techniques, invasive and noninvasive procedure setups, or perform and/or record cardiac output determinations.
Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of medical, anesthesia, and surgical terminology.
  • Problem solving skills to define a problem identify the resources available to help solve the problem.
  • Skills to make technical suggestions to anesthesia providers pertaining to patient care.
  • Decision making skills to independently take action to replace or repair broken equipment or supplies.
  • Knowledge and general understanding of anesthesia procedures, supplies drugs and equipment
  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Math skills to perform simple drug calculations, accurately add, subtract, multiply and divide whole number and decimals manually, by using a calculator or computer.
  • Knowledge of medications, dosage ranges and potential toxicity dispensed form Pyxis machine.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ASATT-The American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians—Certification
  • Bachelor’s degree in health-related field or science.
Special Requirements
  • Physical strength to assist in moving and/or lifting patients and surgery equipment.
  • Must meet on-call commitment.
  • Must see well enough to read charts & instructions.
  • Ability to work/stand for long periods of time in a close environment with others.
  • Must be able to work with adaptability, flexibility & maintain composure during stressful and/or adverse conditions.
  • Must have the ability and fine motor dexterity to appropriately manipulate clinical equipment, computers, keyboard, and mouse.
  • Hear and speak well enough to communicate with others directly and over the phone.
  • Physically able to lift at least 25 pounds and push and pull up to 100 pounds.
  • Proficient in using standard business software including email and common business applications. Demonstrate error-free prose that conveys meaning to readers with clarity and fluency. Write text that effectively communicates ideas, facts, and/or information to an audience appropriate for the assignment. Apply the conventions of standard written English.
