The County of Santa Clara owns and operates a Hospitals and Clinics Delivery System that includes Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, O'Connor Hospital, and St. Louise Regional Hospital.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center - 731 bed tertiary level acute care hospital provides the highest level of adult and pediatric emergency medical and trauma services, a regional high risk Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an ACS-verified Burn Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center, a CARF-accredited Rehabilitation Center, emergency and acute inpatient psychiatric services, as well as a range of other specialized services – in some cases the only such treatment in the region.

O'Connor Hospital -358 bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to more than 1 million residents of San Jose. O'Connor Hospital was founded in 1889 as one of the first hospitals in Santa Clara County.

St. Louise Regional Hospital - 93 bed acute care facility, affectionately known as South County's community hospital, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area. Located in Gilroy, St. Louise is one of the largest employers in the community.

Typical Tasks

Under direction of an Anesthesiologist:


  • Prepares and attaches heated humidifiers to the anesthesia machine;
  • Assists with ventilatory support in transporting patients;
  • Maintains and orders stock of disposable and non-disposable items of anesthesia and equipment, including contact with vendors;
  • Sets up, calibrates, operates, troubleshoots, provides general maintenance and ensures the cleaning of: pulse monitors, dopplers, gas analyzers, respirators, cardiac output monitors, alarm systems, blood gas analyzers, nerve stimulators, EKG monitors, anesthesia machines, automatic blood pressure machines, and other equipment as appropriate;
  • Sets up and assists in placement of Swanz Ganz lines which measure the pulmonary artery pressure of the patient;
  • Adjusts calibration of transcutaneous oxygen monitors;
  • Helps the physician during induction of anesthesia as directed;
  • Draws blood from central venous pressure or arterial lines for laboratory testing; and
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Orders supplies, sets up and stocks anesthesia related supplies in the Operating Room and on carts;
  • Assists in the correct and safe positioning of the patient for the operating procedure to be performed;
  • Acts as liaison with manufacturer's representatives for sales, preventative maintenance, and repair of anesthesia equipment;

Employment Standards

Sufficient training and experience to enable a candidate to acquire the following knowledge and abilities:

Note: A candidate normally would acquire the qualifications for this class through graduation from high school and one year experience working, or being trained, as an anesthesia technician; or through possession of a valid license to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in the State of California.

Knowledge of:


  • Functions and operation of various kinds of anesthesia equipment;
  • Stringent aseptic techniques.
  • Types of anesthesia gases and medications and their application;
Ability to:
  • Work effectively under stress.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment within the parameters of the job and the unit policies;
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with hospital staff and physicians;
  • Exercise good manual dexterity and mechanical ability.
