    Position Overview

    Primary Function:


    Establish and maintain a customer service-oriented atmosphere that is welcoming to the public, and inspires a sense of safety and trust with airport patrons. Actively engaging with patrons, as well as raising and lowering the American flag each day conjures images of consistency and reliability, and must be standard practice.

    This position works with considerable independence and self-direction. Only the general direction and scope of the work to be accomplished are discussed with the supervisor. The staff member is expected to independently carry out position duties and understands what is expected and how to do it.
    This position will directly supervise airport associates and flight instructors.

    Position Description

    Typical Duties & Responsibilities:


    As Airport Manager:
    • Generate revenue through the sale of aviation fuel. Arrange and schedule fuel purchases for the Franklin County Airport. In collaboration with the DBS, update and publish fuel prices to remain competitive in the market. Pump fuel for customers during terminal operating hours.
    • Ensure appropriate staffing at the airport based on the operating schedule.
    • Complete daily inspections to maintain security and safe operations.
    • Generate revenue through a Pilot Supply Shop offering oil and other routine supplies as well as minor aircraft repair and maintenance services. Alternatively, if demand for these services remains low, the manager may establish a relationship with local aviation mechanics to provide on-demand service.
    • Generate revenue through lease and rental agreements for the hangars at the Franklin County Airport. In collaboration with the DBS, update and publish hangar prices to remain competitive in the market.
    • Provide on-call services twenty-four (24) hours per day seven (7) days per week.
    • Develop and administer an operating budget for the Franklin County Airport in collaboration with the Director of Business Services (DBS).
    • Schedule and maintain regular business hours, 8 am-5 pm Monday-Friday, and 1-5 pm Saturday and Sunday.
    • Provide periodic financial reports to the DBS, monthly, and as requested.
    • Develop and promote the Franklin County Airport, including providing sightseeing flights and other promotional activities in collaboration with the University.
    • Maintain all operational equipment and fixtures including runway lights, PAPI lights, fuel system, light tower, windsock, and any other equipment. Coordinate building and facilities repairs and maintenance with University Facilities Management.
    • Develop and maintain a working relationship with Franklin County officials and Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) authorities. Collaborate with University, state, and county officials to maintain the Airport Capital Improvement Plan (ACIP). Manage the state and federal grants process to fund the ACIP.
    • Operate the Franklin County Airport as a public airport in accordance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
    • Develop and maintain an updated Franklin County Airport emergency and security plan in accordance with TDOT and University regulations.
    • Maintain the terminal, hangars, runway, and grounds in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.

    As Chief Flight Instructor
    • Provide excellent ground and flight instruction while maintaining up-to-date student records. Develop a flight training program for private, commercial, and flight instructor certificates as well as the addition of instrument ratings to those certificates. Work toward the accreditation for the flight school. Chief Flight Instructor will teach 3 private ground school sessions each year - fall, spring, and summer.
    • Work with the flight school director to develop new short-term courses and income streams as well as offering FAA safety seminars at the Sewanee-Franklin County Airport.
    • Manage and mentor other flight instructors who may be brought on board at the flight school.
    • Encourage all clients to foster a safety mindset by example and through a program of continuing education.
    • Promote the Sewanee Flying Tigers Flight School and Sewanee-Franklin County Airport and represent it in a positive way to prospective and current clients. Be accessible to answer questions that prospective clients have.

    Judgment Required:

    The performance of the essential duties of this position is dependent upon independent ingenuity and developmental efforts.

    Attributes of a Successful Candidate

    Education:
    Bachelor’s degree.
    Experience:
    A proven record of flight instruction excellence, and business management experience.
    Licenses & Certifications:

    • FAA Flight Instructor
    • Instrument
    • ASEL

    • Must be able to climb (many stairs, ladders),
