Job Description

The Department of African American Studies (https://thecollege.syr.edu/african-american-studies/) in Syracuse University’s College of Arts & Sciences seeks two dynamic scholars of African American Literature to join the faculty in Fall 2023.
One faculty line has been approved for a tenure-track assistant professor.
The other appointment will be at the rank of assistant or associate professor, depending on the candidate’s qualifications.
Both appointments require the selected individuals to have the Ph.D. in hand by August 2023.
Qualifications
We seek scholars whose expertise is in African American literature before 1900, or those who focus on twentieth and twenty-first-century African American Literature. We are especially interested in individuals whose teaching employs digital humanities tools and can illuminate the phenomenon of the African Diaspora. Ideally, applicants for the pre-1900 position should be able to guide student explorations of Black literary developments of the Atlantic World. Applicants for the twentieth and twenty-first-century position should be able to address international developments and perspectives in their courses.
Job Specific Qualifications
Ph.D. in a relevant field by the time of the appointment.
Responsibilities
Successful candidates must show evidence and promise of strong scholarship and sustained research activity, teaching excellence, and a commitment to public engagement.
The positions require individuals to teach two courses per semester, including surveys that introduce fiction, non-fiction prose, and poetry; introductory writing intensive courses on Black culture; upper-level courses on topics in their fields of expertise; and required graduate seminars.
All department faculty are expected to mentor undergraduates and graduate students engaged in research projects and thesis writing.
