FLSA classification: Regular | Part-Time | Non-Exempt

Payrate: $21/hour ~ $25/hour (depending on experience)

Work Schedule: Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 8:30am - 5pm | Monday/Thursday/Friday, 9am ~ 1pm (as needed)* | < 30 hours/week

  • This position will accommodate a flexible work schedule for occasional special events.

Organization

Founded in 1994 on the former Lowry Air Force Base, Wings Over the Rockies is a non-profit community organization dedicated to unlocking dreams of flight through exhibits, local events, and educational programming. We are Colorado’s premier Air & Space Museum having been recognized by CNN Travel as one of their 20 Best aviation museums in the world. Each year we welcome roughly 160,000 visitors representing all 50 states and dozens of countries internationally. We are committed to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility boasting more than 100,000 sq. ft. of open hanger space full of iconic aircraft, space vehicles, historical artifacts, and more. Visitors can experience thrilling flight simulators, discover educational programs, and participate in one of our many exciting museum-sponsored events.

Exploration of Flight (EoF) is our flight-focused educational extension. This 15-acre campus is located at the Centennial Airport where we offer showcase events with a variety of aircraft, aviation immersion programs, pilot ground training, and flight experiences. EoF is home to our Blue Sky Gallery exhibit and interactive aviation center featuring an airworthy fleet of civilian and military aircraft.

Summary

The Aerospace Educator promotes and expands student achievement related to aerospace STEAM topics. This position will support the Museum's educational mandate for the Wings Aerospace Pathways (WAP) program including outreach at area schools and community events. WAP programs are offered once per week to Middle School students (Tuesdays) and High School student (on Wednesdays). The Aerospace Educator is a member of the Museum's Education department reporting directly to the Director of Education and works closely with the Education Program Manager, Education Program Coordinator, and other inter-departmental teams.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct aerospace-related outreach at local schools and community events
  • Provide educational program and classroom support for Wings instructors
  • Instruct and mentor Middle and/or High School age students in aviation and space related courses

Working Conditions

Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum operates within an 80-year-old aircraft hangar. Exploration of Flight is located at a busy regional airport. Environmental conditions may vary.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree or Teacher Certification desirable but not required
  • Prior classroom or equivalent experience working with middle & high school aged students highly preferred
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Able to manage multiple projects and prioritize workloads
  • Knowledge of air & space industries, current events and aerospace trends, emerging technologies, etc.
  • Familiarity and commitment to the non-profit mission of Wings Museum
  • Self-motivated, energetic, outcome-oriented problem solver with excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Able to communicate professionally, effectively, and sensitively with a diverse student population
  • Strong interpersonal, time management, and multi-tasking abilities
  • Commitment to social inclusion to help make the Museum accessible for a wide-ranging audience
  • Must be available to teach classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
  • Proficient with computer applications, digital rendering, 3D printing, laser cutters, etc.
  • Working knowledge of robotics, drones, avionics, flight simulators, and basic hand tools is preferred
  • Experience teaching a wide range of STEAM skills in a project-based environment
