Introduction

The Maryland State Department of Education is dedicated to supporting a world-class educational system that prepares all students for college and career success in the 21st century. With excellent stewardship from our divisions, we oversee State and federal programs that support the needs of a diverse population – students, teachers, principals, and other educators throughout Maryland. As part of the Maryland State Department of Education, the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) provides services to assist students with disabilities prepare for the work world, vocational rehabilitation services to assist adults with significant disabilities who are seeking to enter or reenter the workforce, and the adjudication of Social Security disability claims for the citizens of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

Manage clerical activities, which support Hearing Unit in accordance with policies and procedures. Provide administrative assistance to the Program Manager II and Staff Specialist II Hearing Officers in the evidentiary hearings for those disability claimants whose benefits have been terminated on medical grounds. Manage caseload of hearings claims by reviewing pre- hearing orders and obtain consultative examinations and medical evidence of record for the Administrative Law Judges.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years performing secretarial work or clerical work involving typing duties.

Notes:

1. Additional secretarial or clerical experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Thirty credit hours with a major in secretarial science or office technology from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate of thirty credits for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.
3.Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the Administrative Support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience maintaining multiple schedules.
  • Experience managing and coordinating work to other staff.
  • Experience creating and maintaining spreadsheets.
  • Experience working with an electronic case management software program.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials.
