Job Description
Academic Success Coaches are integral staff members in the Excel Center. Their primary role is to promote continued student engagement in the Excel Center and to serve as a student advocate. Each coach is responsible for a caseload of students, typically ranging from 65-80 students. In order to support student learning and productivity, coaches build relationships with students and provide resources to remove barriers from their educational progress. Effective coaches understand how to triage their caseloads by managing their core responsibilities while also being responsive to student crises as they arise. Additionally, this position will support the school’s motto “Relationships, Relevance, and Rigor”. This position is responsible and will be held accountable for behaving in accordance with divisional and organizational RISE values and expectations.


  • Establishes relationships with students on a caseload of approximately 81 students and supports high retention, attendance and completion rates.
  • Participates in eligibility committee meetings and contributes to the development of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • Collaborates with instructors and other school personnel to monitor student progress and to identify pathways to success.
  • Serves as a liaison between the student, home, school, counseling facilities and community resources such as social services, court services, and family service agencies.
  • Compiles monthly reports and maintains accurate case records.
  • Serves as a resource to teachers and staff regarding social work services and the academic/social needs of students.
  • Gathers background information on the student’s social history by conducting observations, making home visits, conducting interviews, and reviewing student records.
  • Attend all team and professional development meetings.
  • Develops and leads professional development sessions on best practices in adult and mental health and school-based counseling and intervention.
  • Administers academic, social and emotional assessments to determine the needs of students.
  • Develops students class schedules and graduation plans, with a rapid turnaround.
  • Identifies and resolves barriers to student academic success.
  • May provide in-service training and workshops for teachers and staff regarding proper procedures for the referral of students to appropriate internal and external services.
  • Organizes and conducts specialized programs and student support activities.
  • Acts as a member of the school crisis team to provide intervention to students as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Makes court appearances to present data.
  • Manages and monitors student information to ensure academic progress.
  • Conducts specialized individual and group advising sessions to address specific emotional and social needs of students.
  • Conferences with and provides information, support, and advising to students.


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelors Degree
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as an interdisciplinary team member and devise an appropriate service plan for referred students and their families.
  • Ability to accept and/or drive change positively;
  • Must possess the ability to synthesize and interpret diagnostic and assessment data.
  • Requires occasional local travel/transporting individuals; valid driver’s license, up-to-date auto insurance, and good driving record.
  • Demonstrate strong planning and organizational skills and initiative.
  • Must possess ability to collect, interpret, and synthesize information about a student’s social history, community environment, family dynamics, economic differences, and significant crises that influence academic and behavioral functioning.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community agencies, students, families, team members, and others.
  • Must possess excellent communication and time management skills.
  • 2 years of experience in social work, counseling, advising, academic guidance or related field.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Master’s degree in social work, psychology, or a human service-related discipline.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Experience in facilitating and/or offering social science, family counseling, rehabilitation counseling, student counseling/ personnel services, mental health and human services, individual/ family development, family and community services.
  • Experience working with high school aged students in a nontraditional setting and/or an adult education setting strongly preferred.
