Job Description

The Academic Advising Center at the University of Utah promotes a transformative undergraduate experience by advocating for and empowering undergraduate students as they explore, develop, and take responsibility for achieving their academic goals. We serve as the academic home for exploring students—those exploring majors, professional paths, or tools for success. The Academic Advising Center also houses the Academic Standards Program, which manages the academic standings for all undergraduate students and implements support resources, interventions, and academic advising for students that have experienced academic setbacks.
Under the supervision of the Director of the Academic Standards, the individual in this position will provide individualized academic advising and support to students who are not engaging in their studies to their fullest potential and/or students have experienced past or current academic difficulties. They will work with students who are on academic warning, probation, suspension, and dismissal to assess current barriers to success and collaboratively develop concrete goals ideally resulting in a return to good academic standing, declaration of a major when needed, and attainment of individual goals. They will be fully trained in all areas of Academic Standing and Exploratory advising, including the specific intersection of major exploration and academic setbacks.
Academic Standards prioritizes a holistic model of student success and therefore works closely with additional resources on campus such as the Major Exploration Program, Counseling Center, Student Success Advocates, Major and Departmental Advisors, Admissions, Registrar, the Center for Disability and Access, and more. This advisor may be trained in advising theories, trauma-informed practices, academic success strategies, and counseling skills to assist in addressing the many situations students oftentimes experience alongside academic setbacks while ensuring appropriate referrals are made.
In conjunction with the Academic Advising Center team, this position will assist the university in promoting a climate of respect and equity that cultivates and sustains transformative spaces of possibility where people feel safe, valued, welcomed, and respects all students in their quest for individual success through degree programs, certificates, majors, etc.
While this position is primarily in-person, teleworking and hybrid options are available for all advising staff. Learn more about the Academic Advising Center (www.advising.utah.edu) and review the work of each team through our annual reports (https://advising.utah.edu/annual-report.php). For questions about the position, please reach out to the Associate Director of the Academic Advising Center, Jason Atherton, at [email protected]. The Associate Director works closely with the Academic Standards team and is not on the hiring committee.
Priority review date is May 1, 2023
