The College of Agriculture is excited to recruit candidates for our next Academic Advisor, who will serve as the primary advisor for the two undergraduate majors in the department of Biosystems Engineering (BATM and BSEN majors).

Essential Functions
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Lead student advising efforts in the department and ensure that faculty members are current on advising policies and procedures.


  • Assign faculty mentors to students, submit and monitor course substitution paperwork and similar forms.

  • Assist students with questions regarding topics such as transfer credits, transient status, dual enrollment, GAP policies, academic warning/academic suspension, scheduling and course conflict, pre-requisite errors, Degree Works, and academic-grievance issues; maintain and update curriculum options for the BSEN program.

  • Perform departmental degree audits for assigned undergraduate students within 30 hours of graduating.

  • Ensure Degree Works is accurate; maintain list of students on academic warning status and notify faculty mentors of said status.

  • Promote college and university resources available to students including academic tutoring, counseling, financial aid, and accessibility support; promote and support departmental activities and student recruitment and retention activities by representing the department at events such as Camp War Eagle, SOS, TALONS, tours/informational events.

  • Coordinate and participate in BSEN recruiting efforts including student visits, program inquiries and communications, and off-campus recruiting events.

  • Conduct presentation on department programs to various entities both on campus and off-campus; assist faculty and students with internships, Co-Op, special problems, directed research, and study-abroad opportunities for undergraduate programs.

  • Manage documentation and related forms for engineering accreditation; assist with various program/curriculum activities to include maintaining long-range teaching schedule and loading classes into Banner.

  • Coordinate with ASABE student chapter, Alpha Epsilon, and other student organizations about relevant department and student activities; develop effective linkages with key clientele groups such as K-12 teachers and counselors, industry personnel, and community colleges.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:

Advisor I: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; no experience required.

Advisor II: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 3 years of experience in advising of which 2 years includes full-time primary duties of advising in higher ed.

Substitutions allowed for experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, a related and relevant graduate degree may substitute for two (2) year’s experience.

Minimum Skills and Abilities
Excellent communication, planning, organizational, and analytical skills are required.
Ability to successfully work both independently and in a team environment.

  • The individual selected for the position must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States by the start date and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.


Minimum Technology Skills
Proficiency with various spreadsheets and database programs such as Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.

Desired qualifications include the following:

A Master’s degree; familiarity with and understanding of curriculum of STEM majors; experience handling student records and analyzing student academic progress; experience with student success platforms such as Banner Student Information system, DegreeWorks, Advise Assist, and Qlik; advising in higher education or experience with interacting with college students, knowledge of advising policies, practices, and procedures at the post- secondary level.
