ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

The Student Success division at the University of South Florida, is comprised of 60 departments, providing students with academic support, engagement opportunities, health & wellness services and enhancement of the educational experience. Undergraduate Studies provides a strong set of Student Success programs designed to improve student success in navigating the transition to college and the complexities of the baccalaureate experience. It integrates academic endeavors with meaningful experiences within a myriad of student development programs. Together, these programs aim to provide coordinated opportunities for students to develop their identities and intellectual competencies for successful careers and lifelong learning. The (Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) and Bachelor of Science in Applied Science (BSAS) degree completion initiatives are designed to assisting students with earning their first baccalaureate degree.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This Academic Advising position within Undergraduate Studies administers the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) program, a degree completion initiative for returning adult students. BGS also serves our major changers, current students and those facing excess credit hour surcharges. This position advises students concerning their academic plans, progression toward degree, class schedule, choice of major, career goals, updating curricula and other academic activities to assist the student in making decisions concerning personal education goals leading to graduation. In addition, all advisors manage the leadership studies minor and certify degrees for all general studies and applied sciences undergraduates. A successful candidate will possess an understanding of how students benefit from a developmental, intrusive and appreciative advising approach and will exhibit a high ethic of care and desire for student success. Further duties within the position include representing USF with the Complete Tampa Bay partner institutions a statewide initiative to help adult learners complete their degrees online and supporting our industry partnership with Tampa Electric (TECO).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide timely and accurate academic advising for transfer students in the BGS/BSAS majors virtually, by phone, in person and via email. Make recommendations regarding issues such as course selection and hours taken per term based on student's academic history, professional goals, interests, and previous academic performance. Perform simple data analysis, basic statistical analysis and other mathematical calculations pertaining to advising (e.g., GPA and weighted averages, etc.). Interpret and formulate SUS/USF/FCS policies and procedures as related to student advising. Assist in conducting small and large group sessions with students-face to face and via the web-to analyze progress toward completion of academic work requirements at the university, ensuring that students are properly informed regarding specific requirements that must be met for graduation.

Admission of new transfer students and advising/recruiting prospective students into the degree program. This includes assistance with USF admission processes and orientation which overlaps with academic advising.

Management of Academic Program curriculum plans, website updates, application tools, catalog revisions, student population management and marketing.

Represent USF as part of the Complete Tampa Bay statewide initiative and advisor of special population partnership with Tampa electric (TECO) as the USF institutional point of contact. Collaborate with USF Office of Admissions, TECO and complete Tampa Bay staff to encourage enrollment of reentry students and to support adult learners.

Management of Academic Program curriculum plans, website updates, application tools, catalog revisions and marketing. Outreach to departments to develop or maintain concentrations and courses to ensure progression and completion of Undergraduate degrees. Outreach to state and community colleges.

Performs other duties as assigned

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities with two years of experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education. Work experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's degree requirement for this position.

PREFERRED:

Master's degree and at least 2 years of academic advising experience. Master's degree and prior experience with a large college or post-secondary institution. Knowledge of and experience with SUS/USF Policies and procedures, Banner, and OASIS. Strong computer and communication skills. Ability to organize multiple projects simultaneously; ability to work well with others.
