Description

Position Summary:The purpose of the Youth Advocate position is to provide support to a diverse population of students focused on promoting a nurturing school culture and climate. Developing and maintaining healthy relationships with students, families, and school staff are vital to one’s success in this position. Primary responsibilities include supporting and monitoring students’ academic and behavioral growth through individual and group sessions, specific caseloads of approximately 30 students, and by pushing into classrooms when necessary.Education and Experience:High school diploma or equivalent - additional coursework in equity, diversity, social justice, and positive behavioral strategies is preferredExperience working with youth in a supportive or supervisory capacityCPR and/or AED training is preferredExperience with the needs of a diverse student population is preferredActive involvement with youth in a variety of spacesActive involvement with youth in the communityCandidates with training in SEL practices, Mindfulness, and/or safety and security preferredEssential Functions:Establish relationships among students, families, and school staffEngage in enrichment activities that support social, emotional, and academic growthWork in collaboration with social workers and counselors on case managementSupport school-wide programs, including but not limited to, PBIS, academic support classes, social-emotional curriculum, and disciplineFacilitate regular group discussion with caseload and documenting progressSupporting in-building attendanceSupporting daily safety scans by use of on-site safety equipmentAssisting with and communicating about any emergencies with necessary building staffCollaborating effectively with other staff such as building maintenance, administration, and support staffResolving any physical or verbal conflictsAssisting with all activities held in buildings to ensure the safety of its occupantsMaintaining the confidentiality of staff and student informationEffectively communicating in high-stress situations with the ability to remain calm and professionalDocumenting incidents that the employee either personally addressed or assisted withKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Employee will be trained in SEL initiatives, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Youth Mental Health First Aid, Trauma Sensitive Schools, restorative practices, and other training/ongoing training deemed necessaryAbility to work well under direction from building and district administrationStrong knowledge of the strengths, needs, and concerns of the school, students, and familiesAbility to build relationships between students and school staffDemonstrate district core values of student-centered decision making, respect, unity, high expectations, diversity, strong relationships, and equityEncourage, model, and maintain high standards of professional conduct and appearance (prohibited clothing items include but are not limited to open-toed shoes, side-worn hats, and provocative clothing)Excellent attendance recordPractice appropriate conflict resolution skillsDemonstrate fairness and consistency in working with students, colleagues, and other staffMulti-task and work independently on position-related needs/tasksUse de-escalation, conflict resolution, and relationship-building strategies to manage behaviorProvide assistance during hallway transition times and escort students to and from class as neededAssist with supervision during lunch periods as neededProvide regular monthly feedback to safety administrationBe flexible and adaptable to meet changing requirements, processes, and proceduresWork as a collaborative team memberAssist in breaking up fights and controlling confrontational situationsPerform a variety of duties as directed by the building administrator/supervisorWork Environment:School work environment as it relates to this position and its essential functionsMay be required to work additional hours as needed in critical situationsMay be required to travel to different locations within the area supported by RUSDSafety:Employee is responsible for taking all steps necessary to protect yourself and others against occupational accidents, injuries, and illnesses.
