Elephant Keeper Jobs

Assist in the care, well-being, management, behavioral conditioning, and enrichment of a multi-generational, mixed sex herd of African elephants.

Have responsibilities that include: cleaning, animal observations, diet preparation, and medications. Report abnormal conditions to zoological managers.

Practical knowledge and experience with operant conditioning

Demonstrable observation, evaluation, and data collecting skills

Experience providing guest service and guest interaction opportunities throughout your workday.

Experience working with large terrestrial mammals, especially elephants

Knowledge of husbandry requirements and the prevention of zoonotic diseases.

Knowledge of basic nutrition requirements for assigned area(s).

Ability to complete projects in a reasonable time frame to the satisfaction of management.

Knowledge of safety SOP, safety concerns and reporting protocols.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); AA degree or higher preferred.

Three or more years paid keeper experience in an AZA accredited institution.

Provides enrichment as agreed to by department management.

Participates in all safari activities and events, for example, shows and after hour fundraisers, as required by management.

Prepares food in accordance with dietary requirements and restrictions.

Carefully observes the animal collection for signs of illness or injury and reports problems to the department Supervisor.

Trains animals for husbandry behaviors and guest demonstrations

Abides by department or species’ protocols to assure the highest level of keeper and public safety.
