Job Description of a Clinical Psychologist A clinical psychologist is a mental health professional who provides assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They use a variety of therapeutic techniques to help individuals, couples, families, and groups of people understand and cope with their psychological issues. Clinical psychologists may work in a variety of settings, including private practice, hospitals, clinics, schools, and research institutions. Job Skills Required Clinical psychologists must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work with a variety of people from different backgrounds. They must also have strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as well as the ability to interpret and analyze data. Additionally, clinical psychologists must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Job Qualifications Clinical psychologists must have a doctoral degree in psychology, such as a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). They must also be licensed in the state in which they practice. Additionally, many states require clinical psychologists to complete a certain number of hours of continuing education each year. Job Knowledge Clinical psychologists must have a thorough knowledge of psychological theories and principles, as well as the ability to apply them to their work. They must also be familiar with the latest research and developments in the field of psychology. Additionally, they must have a good understanding of the legal and ethical issues related to their profession. Job Experience Most clinical psychologists have at least two years of supervised clinical experience, such as an internship or residency, before they can become licensed. Additionally, many states require clinical psychologists to have at least two years of post-doctoral experience before they can become licensed. Job Responsibilities The primary responsibility of a clinical psychologist is to provide assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They may also provide psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and psychological testing.
