Animal Shelter Assistant Jobs in Iowa

Listen to patrons and provide information about adoptions, reclaims, relinquishments and other service. Provide humane education in a non-judgmental, supportive manner.

Represent Riverdale Animal Shelter in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.

Working knowledge of animal welfare preferred.

Knowledge of breed identification in both canines and felines preferred.

Use discretion and good judgment. Manage highly sensitive situations with calm and professionalism.

Excellent communication skills and consistent ability to model and facilitate open and productive communication in the workplace.

Demonstrated leadership and/or management skills. Experience with volunteer management preferred

Prior experience with donor management and grant writing

Manage donor database and ensure timely acknowledgements.

Experience with creating written or visual content for newsletters, manuals, blogs, websites, social media posts, educational, and/or marketing materials preferred

Proficient in Microsoft Office software and donor management systems

Identify and assist with grant proposals and grant reporting requirements

Is eager to always grow and expand their knowledge and skills, understanding that animal welfare is an ever-changing field.

Is able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with members of the public, team members and management.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND

One year of experience in animal care in a shelter environment, veterinary clinic, or animal care facility; OR

Selected candidates must obtain Florida Animal Control Association (FACA) Euthanasia Certification within the first six months of employment.

Possess the necessary job-related license(s) or certification(s) that may include possession of a Florida Driver License (Class E).

Knowledge of basic methods and procedures of animal care and housing;

Knowledge of basic methods of maintaining and cleaning kennels and other physical spaces related to animal care and housing;

One-year of related experience is preferred.

Exposure to dirt, air contaminants, animals, temperature extremes, noise and toxic

Ability to maintain a safe and sanitary work environment;

Ability to handle animals in a safe and humane manner without personal injury;

Assists the Director of the Animal Facility to performs assigned tasks independently to ensure compliance.

Generates and maintains written records of examinations and standard medical history questions and procedures.

Works with investigators and research staff to lend assistance to various research projects that require unique or specialized husbandry practices.

Coordinates the delivery of unique or specialized husbandry practices or services.

Sanitizes cages, pens, animal quarters, and equipment; performs minor repairs.

Under the direction of the Director and/or researchers, administers medications and/or treatments.
