Job Description

General Purpose

This position is responsible to actively engage Zoo Campers and other guests to foster an appreciation for and understanding of animals and nature through animal interactions and observations, games, crafts, and other activities.

We are pleased to offer this position an Employee Assistance Program, 401K, Paid CA Sick Time earned on an accrued basis. The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $19.00 per hour. Offers will be based on the successful candidate’s experience.

Essential Accountabilities

  • Maintains a safe and healthy environment for all our campers, ranging in age from 3-17.
  • Performs other projects and tasks as assigned.
  • Presents lesson plan components in a professional, fun, energetic manner. Maintains a positive, patient attitude throughout each program session.
  • Gathers all supplies and materials needed for daily activities and informs supervisor coordinators of needed items.
  • Assists with development of lesson plans and resources.
  • Oversees teen volunteers working in assigned class.
  • Maintains an organized flow of class time to accomplish planned activities.
  • Provides effective age-appropriate management of student behavior to ensure an educational, enjoyable time for all participants. Requests assistance from Managers as appropriate.
  • Implements weekly lesson plans including games, activities and crafts that correlate with the program’s overall theme and goals.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) degree required.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Strong verbal and written English communications skills required. Bilingual (Spanish or Hmong) communication skills a plus.
  • Ability to work seasonally-scheduled program hours including occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to work directly with animals to present animal based programs in a classroom setting.

Physical Requirements

These are physical and mental requirements of the position as it is typically performed.   • Visual acuity to read printed instructions and safety information, and to direct student activity at close range and at a distance.
  • The employee is regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
  • This position requires the employee to stand and walk continuously throughout the shift. The employee may be required to bend, stoop, or crouch to assist students.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone), at normal speaking levels with or without correction.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The position functions both indoors and outdoors, with potential exposure to heat, cold, and inclement weather.
  • The employee may work in close proximity to Zoo animals.
