ZONING SPECIALIST

Permitting and Inspections Department

The City of Portland has an opening for a Zoning Specialist in its Permitting and Inspections Department. This is a great opportunity to work in one of the most exciting and dynamic cities in the country on complex land use issues. We are seeking a code reviewer with a specialty in zoning review, interpretation and drafting. The City is in the middle of a multi-year process to revise and clarify its zoning code, and this person would be part of a team to help move that effort forward. This person must be professional with excellent communication skills to interpret and explain the City’s Land Use Code.

The Zoning Specialist will work with city staff to conduct zoning review of proposed development. Knowledge and experience with reviewing plans for compliance with zoning is needed as is the ability to interpret, apply and enforce the land use code. Experience with shoreland zoning, and legislative intent with respect to ordinance language is desired. Must obtain state certification for zoning and shoreland zoning within six months of hire. Excellent written and personal skills required. Graduation from a four-year college or university is strongly preferred, and a relevant Masters degree is also preferred. Any equivalent combination of experience, education, knowledge, skills and training of the requirements described above may also be considered. Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.

CEBA Union position - Grade 18M - Salary range $53,040 to $57,954/year.
