General Summary


The Youth Librarian is responsible for providing engaging and educational library services to children and teenagers within the community. This position involves promoting literacy, fostering a love of reading, and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for young library patrons. The Youth Librarian develops and implements programs, activities, and resources that support the educational and recreational needs of children and teens. They also collaborate with schools, community organizations, and parents to enhance library services and promote literacy initiatives.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities


The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.


Supervises, trains, and guides the development of selected library staff


Plans and presents weekly story times with an emphasis on early literacy development both in the library and at early childhood organizations.


Designs, presents, establishes and supports a variety of library sponsored early literacy outreach, programs for youth including special events, family engagement programs, class visits, and library card signups.


Designs and presents in library programs, classes and events for and with children so that they educate, inform and inspire.


Provides reference and reader\'s advisory services to customers, primarily children and their parents.


Assists in the overall operation of the Youth and Young Adult Services areas.


Prepares book displays, create posters, create bibliographies, bookmarks, and promotional displays for the Youth and Young Adult Areas.


Assists in the preparation, promotion, and implementation of the Summer Reading Program.


Participates in collection development of Youth and Young Adult Collections including purchasing, evaluating and weeding in coordination with the Circulation Supervisor and the Collection Maintenance Supervisor.


Develops effective strategies for communicating the Librarys early literacy goals to individuals and the community through a variety of media.


Utilizes and coordinates opportunities for Grant Funding.


Uses library provided means for continuing education and training. Attends training, workshops, conferences and other continuing education related to youth services.


Maintains an effective working relationship with fellow staff members.


Has a cooperative team-spirit.


Demonstrates timely attendance and completion of work.


Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Entrance Qualifications


Education and Experience


Master\'s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school or equivalent.


Experience working with childreninfants through 17-year-olds and their families.


Understand and complete Grant applications and reporting.


A positive attitude, strong customer service, and excellent people skills are essential.


Position requires working on evenings, weekends and some holidays.


Preferred Qualifications


Prior government, municipal, or non-profit environment experience.


Two to four (2-4) years of library experience in a public contact environment.
