Yakima Basin Habitat Fish Technician I (4) Positions
Yakima Klickitat Fisheries Project (YKFP)
Department of Natural Resources
Hourly Wage: $15.31/Temporary/Full-Time
Location: Toppenish/Ellensburg
Is responsible to assist in all facets of implementing habitat restoration in the ceded lands of the Yakima watershed. Specific duties include coordination with Yakama Nation Bookkeepers, state, local, and federal agencies and other Yakama Nation DNR programs to ensure that projects are implemented on schedule. This position will complete general restoration work, re-vegetation projects, build and repair fence, collect habitat data, assist with cultural surveys, and support various fish culturist activities. Fieldwork in adverse weather conditions will be required at times.
Examples Of Work Performed
  • Build and maintain livestock exclosure fences.
  • Conduct stream habitat surveys and complete data entry using Microsoft Excel.
  • Improve instream habitat complexity by placing large coniferous trees with manual and power tools, including grip hoists, chainsaw and tractor skid winches.
  • Assist Yakama Nation Archaeologist in collecting cultural resources data to support habitat restoration projects. Tasks include creating maps, downloading and uploading GPS points, data entry, and conducting pedestrian surveys and shovel test excavation.
  • Control invasive weeds through herbicide application or by mowing and mechanical removal.
  • Collect and plant live stakes and install rooted and container plants for re-vegetation projects.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to physically work in remote areas under a wide range of weather conditions.
  • Ability to learn basic ArcGIS and Microsoft Excel skills
Minimum Requirements
  • Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driver's permit.
  • Due to the nature of work, employee shall adhere to protection of confidential information.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Required to pass pre-employment drug test.

TRAINEE: The Yakama Nation reserves the right to practice Indian Preference by selecting an Indian applicant as a trainee at a reduced pay rate than announced. A training plan is developed to assist employee to reach required qualification requirements and performance level. After completing training plan, work performance will be evaluated. Upon satisfying qualification requirements, employee will obtain entry level pay.

Preference for employment will be granted to qualified individuals meeting minimal qualification criteria in the following order pursuant to the YN Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.
  • 8-points= Indian (enrolled) spouse of an enrolled Yakama member.
  • 8-points= Indian (enrolled) descendant of enrolled Yakama member.
  • 6-points= Other Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).
  • 10-points= Enrolled member of Yakama Nation.
  • 0-points= Non-Indian.
  • 2-points= Non-Indian spouse of an enrolled Yakama member.
Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.4
  • Positions funded under non-638 federal funding: 8-points= Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).
VETERAN PREFERENCE: Is pursuant to Section 402 of the Vietnam Era Veteran's Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974. For verification, must provide a copy of honorable DD-214.
Application points using the weighted point factor system: Disabled Veterans receive 10 points; All other Veteran's receive 5 points.
