Job Description

JOB TITLE: X-ray/DEXA Technologist


**4 Day Work Week, Free Parking**

**COVID Vaccination Required**


GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:


Operate Samsung DR, RadMediX DR, and GE Lunar Prodigy radiographic equipment across 7 office locations in 3 states (DC, MD, and VA). Perform clinical diagnostic X-ray films and DEXA exams as directed by physicians. Assist in the delivery of safe, high-quality healthcare and patient care management. Document clinical histories and submit billing charges for X-ray and DEXA exams. Enter DEXA results into electronic health records (EHR) system. Manage image transfer to Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS). Work efficiently and effectively to provide patients with the best service possible. Utilize Microsoft Office- Outlook.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to the Radiology Manager and Lead X-ray/DEXA technologist.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


Requires manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination for operation and repair of all department equipment. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Lifts and moves patients weighing up to 300 pounds. Ability to place patients in appropriate positions for operation of equipment. Eye-sight correctable to 20/20 to operate equipment and review developed films. Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. May require exposure to bodily fluids.


TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a medical office environment. Position requires schedule flexibility and travel to any ARA office location when requested by the Radiology Manager.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (This list may not include all the duties assigned)

  • Positions patients and adjusts equipment for taking X-rays following established procedures.
  • Performs studies/scans per physician orders, following established procedures.
  • Safely positions patients and adjusts equipment for taking X-rays following established procedures.
  • Provides proper shielding for patients of childbearing age.
  • Instructs patients regarding procedures. Observes patients for vital signs during procedures.
  • Follows prescribed safety standards in operating equipment.
  • Selects technique factors (kVp, mA, and time) for radiation exposure by adjusting equipment on individual patient basis.
  • Examines radiologic images for quality; properties such as density and contrast, definition, magnification, and distortion.
  • Authorizes release of patients upon completion of radiologic examination.
  • Assists physicians with utilization of PACS.
  • Manually imports DEXA results from outside imaging facilities.
  • Imports CDs with imaging studies into PACS and burns copies of imaging exams to disc per physician or patient request.
  • Develops and processes radiologic images. Delivers images to PACS for physician viewing.
  • Maintains X-ray and DEXA rooms. Stocks necessary medical and radiologic equipment.
  • Cleans/maintains/ and makes minor adjustments to radiologic equipment.
  • Practices the principle A.L.A.R.A. (as low as reasonably achievable) and provides maximum radiation protection measures to all patients whenever possible.
  • Assists with Medical Assistant duties as requested.
  • Remains current with policies mandated by Federal and local governments, Medicare/Medicaid programs and other private healthcare programs regarding handling of laboratory work, medications, and ancillary services.
  • Reviews patient’s history for DEXA exams. Measures height and weight of patient for documentation.
  • Positions patients on the DEXA table and explains procedure of the DEXA scan.
  • Performs Lateral Vertebral Assessment Scans (LVA)
  • Provides educational bone density information and brochures to patients.
  • Reviews and completes medical history sheets, fee tickets and enters recall requirements on each patient.
  • Prints recall letters and mailing labels, then prepares for mailing.
  • Educates patients regarding osteoporosis prevention and management.
  • Analyzes, compares, saves, archives, and prints DEXA scans results for interpretation.
  • Finalizes DEXA reports with corrections from reading physicians.
  • Faxes and/or mails final DEXA reports to patient providers and/or patient.
  • Attends Radiology staff meetings.
  • Enhances professional growth through educational programs and workshops.
  • Maintains ethical relationships and cooperates with all personnel.
  • Commute and provide staffing coverage at any of ARA's office locations if requested by the Radiology Manager based on the needs of the Practice.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology to sufficiently pinpoint areas for radiography.
  • Knowledge of radiology equipment and radiographic imaging protocols.
  • Knowledge of safety hazards common to radiology equipment, body mechanics and patient movement.
  • Skill in properly positioning patients to provide high quality imaging.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Collaborative attitude.
  • Proficient typing skills at a speed of 60 wpm or faster.
  • Radiographer licensure in Maryland, Virginia, and any future states in which the practice provides X-ray and DEXA services.
  • Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot equipment operation and perform simple adjustments.
  • Work independently and on a team.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
  • Apply written guidelines and standardized work practices.
  • Communicate clearly, politely, and effectively both oral and in written.
  • Multitask and prioritize heavy workloads.
  • Abide by guidelines, policies, and procedures of Arthritis and Rheumatism Associates, P.C., and the Osteoporosis Assessment Center.

COMPLIANCE:


  • Follow compliance requirements of certification and licensure mandated by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Maintain radiographer licensure in Maryland and Virginia (and any future states which ARA may provide services in the future).
  • Follow compliance requirements mandated by OSHA.
  • Follow requirements pertaining to collection and handling of laboratory specimens including, but not exclusive of, collection, temperature, containers, and proper disposal of biohazard materials.
  • Follow guidelines for maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to honest and responsible corporate conduct.
  • Identify, report and/or prevent any fraudulent or unethical behavior.
  • Initiate notification to management if inappropriate behavior is observed within the organization.

HIPAA-Minimum Necessary Access to PHI


The responsibilities associated with this position allow access to the computer “role” of X-ray/OAC only. We are committed to enforcing minimum-necessary access to our patients’ PHI by limiting the uses and disclosures of this information within our practice. For this employee to carry out his/her TPO (treatment, payment, and healthcare operations) in a manner that best serves our patients, the employee needs access the afore mentioned computer “role”. Role descriptions are explicitly defined in our HIPAA manual. Access to computer information is password protected. Upon termination of an employee, his/her password will be deleted from the system.


EDUCATION:


  • Associates Degree in Radiography or higher required.
  • Completion of radiography program approved by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

EXPERIENCE:


Minimum of 3-years of experience as a radiologic technologist (preferred).


CERTIFICATE/LICENSE:


  • Current Radiographers Certification with ARRT.
  • State Radiography licensure in Maryland and Virginia (VA license must be obtained within first 90-days of employment).
