Primary Purpose
The Welding Instructor develops, implements, and delivers operations training programs. Determines student ability to satisfactorily meet training objectives. Consults with clients to diagnose and analyze training-related issues. Reviews and revises training materials as necessary. Project manages team in development of new training material and programs. Provides expert consulting to internal Company clients and external agencies on procedures equipment, technologies, and technical issues. Provides leadership and direction to Construction Crews (Company and Contractor) for Field Services and Transmission as it relates to Gas Handling, High Pressure Tie-ins, complex gas purging operations, and the use of highly specialized large Pressure control equipment.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepares written appraisals or interims concerning student’s ability to satisfactorily meet Welding Training objectives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Interprets and explains Gas Standards, policies, and procedures to students in a manner consistent with Company policy. Communicates the Company’s safety vision.
  • Project manages the development of training materials, programs, and training schedules.
  • Completes project and program plans, analyses, communications, and reports.
  • Interviews students and reports evaluations to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Conducts client training and consulting needs analyses interviews and discussions.
  • Coaches and develops employees in all aspects of Welding training including PC, Gas Welding, ARC Welding, PE Fusion, and contractor certification.
  • As a subject matter expert provides technical advice to Distribution Staff, Distribution Field Supervisors and Managers.
  • Acts as work supervisor for students during course of class.
  • Plans, prepares and delivers technical and non-technical training Distribution Welding, PE Fusion and all aspects of Pressure Control.
  • Conducts counseling interview for students not meeting training performance standards or seeking guidance.
  • Responds directly to the field for emergency follow up and serves field clients for complex Technical pressure control operations, Welding operations on large pipeline and High Pressure, and reviews sensitive packages and jobs for Field Services and Transmission.
  • Conducts exit interviews with students when training objectives are not met.
  • Reviews and designs changes in lesson plans, course material, outlines, props, tests and visual aids for continuity, effectiveness and uniformity to support Company procedures, course objectives and policies.
$93800 - $140700 / year
Required Education, Licenses, Certifications and Experience
  • Passed Preparing for Management test.
  • Supervisory / leadership experience directing teams of employees on complex projects and meeting goals and proven ability to mentor new instructors in the area of Welding, Pressure Control and Project Management is preferred.
  • 8+ years of related experience in Welding, PE Fusion, PC, Emergency Response or as an Instructor, or previous experience in all facets of distribution pipeline operations, field operations, and /or gas operations.
  • Experience in welding – preferably experience with Oxy fuel welding, High Stress Metal Arc, SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) 7018 Up-hill, PE Fusion, Plastic Fusion, Electro Fusion, etc. is preferred.
  • Valid California Driver's license. Must be able to travel within the company service territory.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of problem solving and analytical tools and approaches.
  • Must be able to travel within the company service territory.
  • Requires outstanding oral communication skills in presenting and facilitating discussions and other learning activities in the classroom or on job sites in Field Operations. Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor others.
  • Extensive knowledge of Gas Standards, Gas Handling procedures, policies and regulatory requirements, and TD Williamson Pressure control equipment. Requires extensive knowledge of field operations, distribution pipeline operations and Gas Operations. Extensive knowledge of company procedures, policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to plan and track a program or project budget.
  • Thorough knowledge of basic mathematics and applied algebra in order to successfully instruct the student in specialized fields of expertise.
