POSITION PURPOSE
The Department of Radiation Oncology has an excellent opportunity for a Web Computing Specialist. Reporting to the Manager – Departmental Computing, this position will have primary responsibility for performing modifications to our department website and management of our social media and public outreach efforts. This position will also have opportunities to analyze existing business processes and develop new workflow structures to optimally meet business needs.
This position will be team oriented, resourceful, customer focused, and can manage time independently to propose and meet project deadlines. The right candidate has a strong background in project management and can successfully plan, implement, and close projects of varying size and scope. This position will work closely with key stakeholders, but has no direct reports and will require a high degree of independence.
The Department of Radiation Oncology specializes in the management of cancer patients undergoing treatment using radiation therapy as the main modality of treatment. Radiation can be given as a curative modality, either alone or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy. Our educational programs include resident training for radiation oncology and for medical physics, and rotations for medical students. We regularly have visiting scholars working with our faculty. Research programs include radiation chemistry and radiation biology as well as clinical trials. The Department of Radiation Oncology is an integral part of the Cancer Program at the University of Washington and Fred Hutch Cancer Center. We provide radiation oncology services at all FHCC locations, including South Lake Union, Northwest Hospital, Poulsbo and the Seattle Proton Center, the Veterans Administration of Puget Sound, the Gamma Knife facility at Harborview Medical Center and UWMC- Montlake. Our faculty sub-specialize in Bladder Cancer, Bone Metastases, Brain Metastases, Brain Tumors, Breast Cancer, Colon, Rectum and Anus Cancer, Gynecologic Cancer, Head and Neck Cancer, Lung Cancer, Lymphomas, Prostate Cancer, and Skin Cancer. We provide the following treatment types: external beam radiation therapy, brachytherapy, stereotactic radiation therapy, gamma knife, fast neutron therapy, and proton therapy. As one the premier academic training programs in the world, the department has 75 faculty, 14 residents, and over 50 staff and postdoctoral scholars.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Design, Development, and System Administration (50%)
  • Develop and maintain web systems using various web client and server technologies including WordPress, HTML, XML, CGI, Perl, PHP, CSS, JavaScript and MariaDB running on or interacting with Apache web server.
  • Programming and providing expert advice and training to faculty and staff of the department.
  • WordPress theme development, configuration, management, site setup and customization
  • Coordination of all web content/materials updates; and technical assistance regarding the design of new sites for department events, courses and research projects.
  • Establish and maintain secure sites and directories for restricted internal information access.
  • Develop scripts for web-based forms, using both client-side and server-side technologies such as JavaScript (with and without frameworks e.g., jquery, quill.js), Perl, PHP, and shell scripts (e.g., bash, zsh).
  • Design, develop, and administer database-backed web systems for multiple groups and users.
  • Communicate regularly with RadOnc faculty and staff regarding website designs and content to assist groups within the department keep their online information updated.
  • Ensure that the web services are run under best practices on security, and train faculty and staff on it.
  • Provide web design and development assistance to the department faculty and staff.
  • Keep up with technology fronts and be able to train and work with users on Windows, Mac, and UNIX environments.
    Social Media Management (30%)
  • Independently conduct periodic competitor analysis for medical and medical physics residency programs
  • Independently review use of social media by external Radiation Oncology departments in the US
  • Maintain a data base of current department marketing and social media use
  • Document recommendations for ongoing social media strategy and appropriate content
  • Develop implementation plan for social media strategy
  • Confirm plan compliance with university policies
  • Establish social media venues for department use
  • Create schedules for developing content
  • Document ongoing plan and standard procedures
    Support – Internal Websites, External Websites, and Web Applications (10%)
  • Contact department system users to understand any reported issues or concerns with existing web pages.
  • Determine whether the reported issues are a defect or a request for change.
  • Provide access sign-on, onboarding, and training to all newly hired staff and faculty.
  • Design and implement appropriate fixes following established design/build standards and procedures.
    Other Web duties (10%)
  • Manage and coordinate web audio and video streaming projects for departmental seminars, conference and functions.
  • Help design, alter and convert graphics files and text documents for inclusion in web pages and printed departmental publications.
  • Work as assigned to implement desired operational improvements based on project planning provided by department faculty, department Vice-Chair, and the RadOnc department Chair.
  • Develop both web based and hands-on training programs to assist faculty and staff with web-based programs and utilities.
  • Other duties as assigned
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in technical field plus 2 years’ experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least two years of web development experience and social media management
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong foundation using SharePoint Solutions Nintex, Infopath, JAVA programming.
  • Development experience that meets technical excellence and the needs of the users; ability to make template updates, build modules and views, and perform UI customizations.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including team and relationship building
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; exceptional decision-making skills
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to learn/adapt new methods to support this role.
  • Proven ability to independently prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines
  • Experience with a content management system
  • Expertise in graphic and productivity software such as Adobe Web Suite (WordPress, Drupal, Dreamweaver, Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator) and MS Office.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with (and established presence on) Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat, etc.
