ABOUT THE JOB
The Water Treatment Plant Operator controls the operation of treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and for industrial use. To retain the job, in addition to acceptable performance, an operator must, within one year of hire, pass the Grade IV level exam administered by the State of Utah.
This position is classified as safety sensitive and is subject to random drug testing.
SCHEDULE
This position will work at one of our three locations (Ogden, Layton, or Bountiful). The shift includes rotating 12-hour shifts. The shift schedules are 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. Shifts rotate every 28 days.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Not necessarily a comprehensive list.)
- Obtains water samples of the raw, applied and treated water for tests as required -for turbidity, total alkalinity, ph, chlorine residual, taste and odor, color, and jar testing.
- Starts standby equipment in case of failure of any piece of equipment.
- Must be capable of running the SCADA system and understanding when action is required and knowing how to properly respond.
- Promotes and adheres to the District’s core values (collaboration, ownership, mutual respect, professionalism, appreciation, safety, and sustainability).
- Chemically flocculates incoming water to reduce silt, dirt, and harmful bacteria count.
- Maintains proper and safe levels in all reservoirs.
- Performs various water tests and records the results in a daily log every two (2) hours.
- Receives and stores all types of chemicals in proper container.
- Works rotating shift that may include eight or twelve-hour workdays, or any other shift deemed necessary.
- Maintains daily treatment plant operating log.
- Makes tours and observations a minimum of every two (2) hours of chemical feeders, pressure gauges, meters, pumps, air compressors, chlorine residual recorder, water recording and measuring devices, and all other mechanical equipment that has any movement and makes visual inspections of all processes.
- Maintains adequate water flow through the plant at all times to avoid reverse flows through the effluent line.
- Backwashes filters and enters backwash data on operating log as directed by Plant Manager.
- Makes adjustments where needed.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS (Not necessarily a comprehensive list.)
- Drains sedimentation basins and washes walls and floors to free algae growth and mud and all other foreign matter.
- Maintains security of plant day and night.
- Cleans and paints equipment and structures.
- Cuts weeds and shovels snow from around equipment and walkways, performs maintenance on the plant and some minor repairs to plant equipment.
- Scrubs and polishes all floors in filter building, dusts furniture, pipes, handrails, pumps, air compressors, etc.
- Maintains ground area around treatment facilities as needed.
- Performs all other assigned duties.
- Conducts tours through the plants.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS(The education and experience requirements for this job may be satisfied by any acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.)
Education: High school diploma or equivalent with sufficient exposure to basic math and chemistry (preferred).
Experience: No prior experience is required, although prior employment where basic reasoning skills were employed would be helpful.
Knowledge: Knowledge of basic arithmetic and some knowledge of elementary algebra; some knowledge of basic chemical processes, reactions, and lab procedures; some knowledge of basic mechanical maintenance and operations. Basic knowledge of federal and state water quality regulations.
Skills: Basic computer skills. Critical thinking skills, judgment and decision making.
Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge acquired through training to the detection and resolution of problems; ability to remain calm in pressure or emergency situations, ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to work rotating shifts.
Responsibility: The operator is responsible for the proper functioning of equipment, cleanliness of the plant, preparing and reporting the daily water treatment plant operating log, collecting water samples at assigned places, running routine tests of the water, reading meters, gauges, and recording devices for delivery of water that will meet State of Utah and United States public health laws, for security of the plants, noting on log any irregular noises of equipment or any other unusual observations that may have some bearing on the operation of the plant.
Mental Application: The operator must be mentally alert at all times and use good judgment in the overall operation of the plant to prevent serious and expensive damage to equipment. The operator must continuously be able to concentrate on tasks, remember details, make decisions, adjust to changes, examine/observe details, think analytically, and use effective verbal communication.
